THE SHEFFIELD HANDICAP. TWO COMPETITORS DISQUALIFIED [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 11 March 1914

THE SHEFFIELD HANDICAP. TWO COMPETITORS DISQUALIFIED " What's going to be (lone about tlio Sheffield: it was a bad turn out 7" remarked a member of committee, after the financial business was com pleted. A suggestion was made that the runners, S. A.'Nowton and Jas. Wight, be asked for an explanation, but this, it was reported, had already been done. Their explanation was viewed as any thing but satisfactory. The rules of the V.A.L. were con sulted, wherein power was given the committee to deal with tlie matter, in the absence of stewards. A motion was carried, that Newton and Wight- be disqualified for l'-J months for not trying to win the SheliicU! 1 fandicap. As was remarked, '■ It the com mittee look no action the sports would suffer in the future. There is too much of this sort of thing going on."

POSTAGE STAMPS EGYPT'S ISSUES [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 13 March 1914

POSTAGE STAMPS EGYPT'S ISSUES (By Fred. J. Melville, In "The Dally Telegraph.") The Khedive Abbas Ililml cele brates this day the twenty-second an niversary of Ills accession (January S, 1S92), and the new stamps of Egypt which have been ready for some time have been withheld for issue to-day. The new stamps have been expected for some months past, the Intention of the authorities to have new stamps being first announced In "The Daily Telegraph" in October, 11*12. The cur rent number of "The Near East" pre sents a supplement giving illustrations of to-day's issue, showing the stamps to be distinctly Egyptian in design, and not less characteristic in execution of the typography of the London firm of Messrs De La Rue and Company Limited. As "The Near East" states, the most significant fact about the new issue is the use of English wording for Trench; for "Poste Egyptienncs" is now substituted "Egypt Postage," and the value "Un Milliemc" gives place to "One Millieme," etc. All the valu...

MARRYING OF MURPHYS GRAZING RIGHTS AND AFFECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 13 March 1914

MARRYING OF MIRPHYS GRAZING RIGHTS AND AFFEC TIONS. The marrying season Is coming on in I Connaught—it lasts from about mill- | January until Lent — and important i questions have to be settled. They atv | ■questions of money mainly (says the j Cunnaught correspondent of "The Daily I Kxpress' ) because Mary Murphy may be as beautiful as the Dark Ftosalecn herself, but if alio has not £60 or so by way of a dowry, or a farm with graz ing for about four cows, she Is not go ing to find a husband in Mayo. It is hard to believe that so charming a people as the Irish peasantry, to whom the poets have ascribed so many romantic gifts, should measjre the ten derest passion in the terms of grazing rights for four cows, but Mr Finn O'Brollisan, who takes an hereditary interest in the concerns of the con gested district from which I write, as sures me that they all do. Mr O'Brolllgan thinks romance may still linger in Walsall and Rtow-on-the •Wold, but iJe^says it has not been known about Ballin...

SAPETY IN AIR THE NEW STABILISER Mr Orvillc Wright's prediction about the popularity and cheapness of aero-1 planing as a national pastime in 1014 (:-ays the New York correspondent of | "The Daily Telegraph") is endorsed by many people here, who believe that a i really efficient "stabiliser** will shortly be placed on the market. The Amcri-, can inventor's device, so successfull> ! tested at Dayton, Ohio, as described al-, ready In "The Daily Telegraph," con sists of a compensating appliance at tached to the steering post, which, when the machine suddenly dips or swerves, rfutomatically tips the wing; and rudder to the proper positions. Mr Wright made seven circles wfthou: touching any of the controlling levers. Several times the craft appeared to be diving, but on each occasion righted it self automatically. The flights were made on the llftli anniversary of the winning of the Mlpholin trophy by Wilbur Wright, in prance. To-day a daily aeroplane passenger service was Inaugurated...

GRAND DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 13 March 1914

BRAND DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT There is an old story of no good tiling ever coming out of Nazareth. It is some times quoted with tiie name of the local town. To sonic people there is no possible hope of their town ever producing music —vocal or instrumental—or dramatic ar tists that would hoar favorable compari son with other towns or travelling shows. It is a fallacy; and the quicker people realiso it the better. The Mechanics' Hall was crowded in the evening, yet not overcrowdod, when the Yarrum Dramatic Society, for tho Agricultural Society, staged a programme of two comedies and n drama. It is no li^ht undertaking for an amateur company to perform before such u large and critical audience, yet the local artists aquittcd .themselves credit ably. The ontertainmont opened with a march, "Commodore," by the Lyric Or chestra. It was splendidly rendered, but judging from the reception by the audience the orchestra is not given its proper place in the evcniug'ii programme. It id not a "st...
