Latest daisies. WRECK TliE PEMLES. ' What Caused the Dis aster. EXPLANATION THEORETI CAL. Melbourne. Anril 5. After waiting in anxious ex pectancy for two days for the ar rival of the Pericles passengers at Freemantle, in order that some definite information might be gleaned concerning the disaster which befell the vessel, the public learned but little beyond what they already knew. The tug Monara, with the passengers, officers, and men, of the ill-fated vessel on board, steamed into Freemantle on Saturday afternoon, and their arrival at the wharf was awaited by large crowds of people. Those on board the tug seemed little worse for their experience, and were apparently in good spirits. They were loudly cheered. . The story of the disaster given by both officers and passengers is identical with that, though, of course fuller inits detail. con veved by the original message reports ing the disaster. The vessel -v^as ^teaming along in mqderate weather, and without warning of any descrip...

DETAILS OF INSURANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 6 April 1910

DETAILS 'OF INSURANCE. The news of the disaster to the Pericles came as a great shock to underwriters and shipping people generally. The foundering of 4he Pericles is one of the heaviest losses sustained in Australian waters for some yers. The Periqles is roughly , valued at £258, OQQ, and she i§ believed to be fully covered at Lloyds. The value of the cargo is set down at £300,000. Enquiries among the underwriters elicited the infor mation that several of the local companies, have lines on the cargo. One company carried in surances amounting to about £20,000 — that is, on cargo from all the States, while other com panies had lines ranging from £1000 to £6000. The United Insurance Company has £5000, the Union Insurance Society of Canton £5000, the National In-1 surance Company of New Zea land £2000, and the British Dominion £1000. Among other companies holding lines are the British and Foreign, the Canton, and the Alliance.

NO HOPE OF SALVAGE. [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 6 April 1910

NO HOPE OF SALVAGE. Nautical experts' agree 'that there is no hope of raising the Pericles in her, present position. She is on one of the most ex posed portions of the Australian coast, where from April to November the. weather is gene rally very unsettled and tempes tuous, and gales are frequent. To work in such weather and among so many contiguous dan gers would be out of the question, and the Pericles will undoubtedly remain on the sea bottom for ever. Of course, it is probable that divers will visit her to re- i cover valuables and the mails. ,

A NARROW ESCAPE. ACCIDENT TO MR C. DWYER [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 6 April 1910

A NARROW ESCAPE.                 ACCIDENT TO MR C. DWYER It was learnt with regret on Sunday last that Mr C. Dwyer, licensee of the Federal Hotel, met with a painful acci dent on the previous evening. It appears that Mr Dwyer, had been on a visit to Huonville on Saturday, and was returning in the evening on horseback. When crossing the Huon ville bridge he met a waggon coming in the opposite direction. He kept close to the railing, but doubtless owing to the darknoas the driver of the vehicle did not observe him, and jammed him. The horses attached to the waggon apparently became frightened, and as soon as the collision occurred they lurched forward. The rail of the waggon came into violent contact with Mr Dwyer's right leg, and inflicted an ugly wound. The calf was badly lacerated, the wound being several inches in length and deep. Mr Dwyer rode straight through to Franklin, wher...
