LIGHITNING CONDUCTORS. (ABRIDGED FROM s. M. HERALD.) SIRt W. SNow HARRIS gives the following prac tical deductions with respeet to lightning.con ductors : " 1st. Copper is the best kind of metal for a conductor. " 2nd. The quantity of metal should not be less than that represented by the section of a eolid cylinders inch in-diameter. " 3d. The metal should be placed under as great an extent of surface as is consistent with strength, and should bo perfectly continuous. 4th. The conductor should involve in its course the :principal detached masses of metal in the building. 5th. It should be placed as close as possible to the walls which are to be defended, and not a distance from them, and be carried directly into the ground. 6th. It should'be attached to the most promi nont points of the building, and if its length be very considerable its dimensions should be in creased. Lt stly. BY the Prince Alfred (s), which arrived at 3.30 a.m. this morning, we have intelligence from Taranaki to the 30th March. %nother engage ment had taken place at Waricka, of which the following is an outline. It is calculated that upwards of six hundred natives were engaged with: the troops and militia, and that some sixty of them have been slain, among whom are four 'of .t'heir rincipal chiefs, and many more wounded.
