OBITUARY. Reference was made by Mr. L. L. Philpott, J.P. (chairman of Hawthorn Court), to the death of an old and esteeemd justice of peace in the per son of .Ir. J. O'Nial. Deceased .was popular amongst his fellow justices, and always gave. his decisions in a straigtforward and upright manner. Mr. Birch, J.P., endorsed the r'e marks of the chairman. Mr. Back house, on behalf of the bar, and,.Sub Inspector Jones for the police, also spoke in very high terms of the late justice of peace. The Trustees, Executors, and Agency Co. Ltd. is applying for pro bate of the will of Mrs. Catherine Ariell, late of Inglesby-rl., Camber well, ividow, who died on igth July, leaving property valued at ,£1I292, consisting of realty £?I12, and per sonalty £180, to her children. Mackay: i.: "That in order to carry out the works and undertakings stated in the notice published in the" Government Gazette," dated 15th July, 1914, the Council of the City of Hawthorn hereby authorises the borrowing of S thesum of £40,000 by the issue of debentures,bearing interbest at the rate --- of 4j per cent. per annnm,and charged upon the security of the Municipal Fund." Cr. Edward Charles Rigby, MAYOR OF HAWTHORN, 1914-15, was elected for Auburn Ward in 19g1, is a native of Melbourne, where he was born in 1873. He is no stranger.to Hawthorn, having resided with his grandparents at the corner of Auburn and Riversdale roads over thirty-three years ago. He re ceived his early education at the State school, Kensington, under Colonel T. S. Marshall, and whilst there was a member of the cadet rifle team in I1887, which won three times against the schools of Victoria the valuable shield presented by the late Sir Fred erick Sargood. At this school he first acquired a taste for public .speak Sing and the law, owing to the excel lent guidance of the Colonel, who en couraged his pupils to take part in nmock Parliamentary debates written by him, and also in various well known court trial scenes. HAWTHORN CITY COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Council wa:s held on Monday mroning at ten o'clock for the purpose of electing the Mayor, and fixing the allowance for tlhe ensuing year. Burton made reference to the request for bands to accompany troopships, and with that object in view the Melbourne Bands Associa tion was holding a meeting to deal with same. The Hawthorn CityBand desired to assist, and wished to know if permission would be granted to them to play in Central Gardens, on Sunday, 6th September, for the pur pose of raising funds to augment the movement. PATRIOTIO CONOERT. Send off to Hawthorn Troops. Great Enthusiasm Shown. The Hawthorn Town Hall was well filled on Wednesday night, when occasion was taken to give the local residents who are leaving with the Expeditionary Force a fitting send off. On arriving at the hall the soldiers were given a rousing reception, and as they were escorted to their seats• they were greeted with a veritable tor nado of applause, which lasted seve iral minutes. The National Anthem was then sung, while the Mayor (Cr. Rigby) requested the councillors at the coun cil meeting to be tiupstanding. He writes :- SWarburton Pike, who saw them at -Mackay Lake, October 20, 1889, says: rI cannot believe that the herds (of buffalo) on the prairie ever surpassed -.. in size la Foule (the throng) of the S"aribou.
