(TO THE EDITOR OF THE HEBREW STANDARD.) [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

(To the Editor of The Hebrew Standard.) Some conflicting opinions appear to exist with regard to a recognition of the service rendered to the Jews Free School in London by Mr. Moses Angel in the form of a monetary testimonial to be forwarded by our co-religionists in N. S. W. A great deal has been .said, and with some truth that 'Charity begins at home,' and although the prop- sed subscription to this fund was intended to be purely complimentary, yet when there are unfortunately so much required for those in need, as proved by the numerous applications to the Sydney Jewish Aid Scciety whether it would not be better to augment the capital for this deserving institution, and thus enlarge its sphere of usefulness in lieu of making a collection for an occasion which will not eventuate fcr 2 or 3 years* An illuminated address expensive of appreciation for Mr. Angel's long service and untiring efforts in so good a cause as installing; religious education and doctrines into the minds of hi...

THE LOUIS PULVER MEMORIAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

THE LOUIS PULVER MEMORIAL. ? + ? On concluding the business of the Education Board's annual meeting, the Rev. A. B.Davis opened the meeting convened to take into , consideration the best means of establishing a memorial to the late Mr. Louis Pulver. He expressed regret at the small attendance of the many well wishers of the late Mr. Pulver during his lifetime, and whom he was sure were anxious to perpetuate his memory. Prom the earliest time it has been customary to mark the memory of a good and worthy man by erecting a monument, by raising a cairn or setting up an obleisk or statue, or placing a portrait ia some, institution. These things have taken place* in latter days by creating a fund to endow a Hospital, alms house, or con valescent home, or the collecting of a fund to found a scholarship Mr. Louis Pulver by giving his time and --tudy to the benefit of his fellow-man and his over anxiousness had assisted to the termination of his life at such an early age. He was a good and w...

The late Mr. Abraham Sonenfild. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

The Late Mr. Abraham Sonenfild After a brief illness of but seven or eight days Mr. Abraham Sonenfild died at his residence, 8 Cooper-street, Surry Hills, Sydney, on Saturday, December 11, at 7:40 pm. The Rev. A. D. Wolinski was present and administered the last Jewish rites. The Revs. A. B. Davis and P. Philippstein had also been in attendance. The death came as a great blow to the family who were all gathered round the bedside at the last. Mr. Sonenfild had endeared himself to a large circle of friends by his unassuming manner and personal kindness. Not only among the Jewish poor was his name affectionately known, but all classes shared in his goodness. His actions were all guided by his faith, to which he adhered in a rigidly orthodox manner. Each year he faithfully followed out its ritualistic ceremony, and on the last Feast of Tabernacles we recorded having visited the Succah at his residence, and of the truly fraternal welcome accorded all who came to enjoy the privilege of br...

The Melbourne Bourse Street Synagogue. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 December 1897

The Melbourne Bourse Street Synagogue. We mentioned in a recent paper that the Hon. Nathaniel Levi made an earnest appeal for aid to be given promptly and generously to the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, Bourke Street, Melbourne, the Officers of which find themselves in serious straits, owing to the threatened foreclosure of a mortgage of .£5,700. It will be seen from a letter that Mr. Levi received a cablegram from Melbourne to the effect that the local collection has produced ^'1500. It is hoped connections will contribute liberally towards the Fund. Others, also, will feel impelled to rescue from serious peril, a Congregation who have, in past times, been conspicuously liberal in assisting their brethren in. Europe upon every occacion when an appeal has been made to them. It is now with unfeigned pleasure I give you the following copy of cablegram received by me replying to my enquiry as to what progress had been made in Melbourne : — ' Melbourne, October 22nd, 1897.— Save collec...

The Young Astronomer. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 December 1897

Tlie Young Astronomer. r Towards the end of the last century, there ived in Lithuania an old rabbin, named Maimon, whose son, at a very early age, shewed extraordinary aptitude for learning. ' At the age of seven the lad was renowned in the village for the facility with which he learned tne x-iDie, Hie neorew language, ana the Talmud. A taste for study developed itself so forcibly in this youth, that such limited instruction did not long suffice him. He applied with ardour to the art of drawing, for which he exhibited great talents. . Discouraged by his father, who had destined him for a rabbin, young Maimon hoped other wise to satisfy his desire for knowledge. In a shut cabinet th*re was some old books, which Bad been carefully kept from him. One day, in the absence of his father, he examined, and found them to be a set of worm eaten Hebrew books, on history, philosophy, and astronomy ; they opened to him a new world, which he explored with rapture He removed them to his own chambe...

For some time post a rumor has been actively ?circulated around the Eastern district cf London that its Jewish population were to be provided with a special place of amusement.
