OUR ROAD TRUST. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 1 April 1857

OUR ROAD TRUST. We have great pleasure in publishing in our columns a letter from Mr. Hay, which, by its just and even generous charities, ' covers a mul titude of sins' of which his department 'heretofore were guilty. -Of these offences, perhaps the greatest was the denial ot Government aid to roads included in any trust. Such a plan would have been a grievous injustice to the people of this district, who created their trust, and volun tarily taxed themselves to the amount of four or five thousand pounds .per annum to aid Govern ment in repairing roada which had been neglected until they had become nearly impassable. Towards the repair of the Lochinvar road he yields lo the full extent o...

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 1 April 1857

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. IT is Strange that the movement in favour of tho abolition of capital puni-dmient has not iieen checked by the extraordinary increase of crime which just nmv pervades all Europe. We believe that -the rational and sincere stipiwrtvrs ol this movement aie qtiito content with its present on ward progress, aa manifested, not by any amend ment of the Statute Book, but os suffi iently evinced by the disincHntv-ion ol' juries to -eturn verdicts of li guilty ' in capital cajes, unices nndur tne dourest tesu nony ana unuer circumstances demanding rigorous justice, and the inclination manifested by the Government of excr isiug the roval prerogative of mercy in all cases to which it may safely be ex ended. But there are other ' signs nf the times' which conclusively prove the progress of that philanthropy which can never re?t in perfect sutisfaaion until man ceases to condemn his fellow men to death. In years happily now long past, the criminal was the chief objcct of a hor...

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1857. THE OPENING OF THE RAILWAY. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 1 April 1857

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1857. ? TJIE OPENING OF THR RAILWAY. MONDAY was a grand day — if not for tho actual ! tlemonstration made, nt. least, in the effect, that tho work which it witnessed will have on the future welfare of this, the Garden of Australia. The opening of the Newcastle Railway woa the inauguration of a work, which is destined, more than anything else, to advance the intereita, mate rial and moral, of the whole Northern Districts. It 13 a glorious seat, this 'conquest of Jimo by Intellect' — the auxiliary of science, the promoter of comfort, the great friend to civilization. The telegraph and the railway almost annihilate time nnd space, and if Shakespeare had lived in thiBe days, we arc afraid we ihould have lost Komeo'a beautiful apostrophe. Tho wonders of thi» nge belie the proverb — there ia still something new ?under the sun. We arc afraid to trust our imagination with the prospects which tie opening of the railway pre sents to us — wo ii.ight be inclined to exaggerat...
