THE JEFF. DAVIS PETTICOAT STORY. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 16 November 1865

THE JEFF. DAVIS PETTICOAT STORY. A very considerablequantityofink hasbeen expended in efforts to show, first, that Jeff. Davis w as not attired in his wife's nor any other woman's petticoats at the time of the capture, and secondly, that if he had been so habited, the fact would have reflected no discredit on him as a chivalrous gentleman; because there are severalnotorious precedents to prove that public sentiment justifies the employment of anydisguise under such cir cumstances. Lavalette was applauded for his success in esaping from prison and from death by assuming his wife's garments. But Jeff. Davis did not succeed, and it was the failure of the trick that makes the affair ri diciculous. A correspondent who accom panied Davis in his flight makes the best story possible for him, when he says:--"Had he (Davis) not gone to assure himselfof his wife's safety, and had he not been excessively f-tigued while there, Colonel Pritchard would be without the honour of capturing him, for n...
