MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 May 1878

MELBOURNE LETTER. (FROM OUR OWN COnRnSPONDENT.) The fact that a considerable amount of depression lsas existed in commercial and operative ciroles has been patent for some time, and formed a common topic.of con versation, but the fact was brought forcibly udfder public notice by the holding on Mon. day last of a large open-air meeting of the unemployed on the vacant block of ground in Collins street, which belonged to the late Mr G. Petty. The numbers present have been variously estimated at (romn 1500 to 3000, and there is no doubt that the majority were bona idle working men out of work. Of course the holding of the meeting was rather aal apropos for the Government, and efforts were made first to represent it as a sham, and when that became impossible, to show that the want of employment was purposely caused by em ployers'of labor discharging their hands in order to bring 'pressure on the Government. Some of the speakers at the meeting were Ileterodox, and spoke disrespectfully of...

C H I P 8. And Salem did bring before the judgment sent those who did so much offend the senses of the dwellers in the main street of the township, and there will be no more such nuisance in the land near unto the Corner; and Patrick saw that it was good, not only for him self but for his children, and he did therefore' bless Salem, and did shout also; andl they will, who pass that way at eventide, have no more to hold their nasal organs against thie smell from the place wherein they did boil that which was unclean, bones, offal, and the like. And the lawgivers did command that unto the State they who did this thing in the land should pay five pieces of silver, and did order that they do not the same any more in the land, and that they will offend no more, you can hot your bottom dollar. And they took oxen, and went unto the paddock hold by the leader of the body known as those who " trade free" in the land, and the oxen were made fast unto a house, and did drag it even through the ...

POLICE V. BAUDERWIG. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 May 1878

POLICB V. BAUDERWIO. The defendant was charged with per. mitting dancing in her licensed house on the evening of 22nd April, . Mr Coster, on behalf of the defend ant, urged that the case was not before the court. It had boon tried before and was dismissed. The Police Magistrate referred to the records, and found that the case had been heard and dismissed "without pre-. judice," and must therefore go on, but thought it would have been better had the magistrates been present who heard the facts of the case. Mr Moon, Shire Secretary and Treasurer, proved that defendant took out and paid for a license. The P.M.--Where is the license ? Mr Coster.-I don't know. I have bad no notice to produce. The police asked for a postponement, but the Bench heold it was a hard case to bring the defendant so often to court and then were not prepared to go on, and therefore refused a postponement and dismissed the case. YEA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 May 1878

YEA. * -4--t (PROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) Our affirmative township can well afford to smile at the distorted shape the remarks made by Mr Woods, re railway communica tion, have assumed in a recent issue of your journal. At the same time It is hardly com plimentary to my veoracity, I having reported the prce-edings on the occasion of the late Ministerial visit, to say that the Minister of Railways left it an open question which way the line would come. True, lie did not dis tinctly state which side the River Goulburn it would be formed, although le intimated the starting point would be Seymour in preference to Tallarook. My report was perfectly independent, truthful, and un prejudiced. I have not a pound's worth of property in the Shire of Yea, and am not likely to remain many months longer in this townships but I again affirm, and without fear of contradiction, and after looking over my notes, which I carefully took down, that the Minister of railways distinctly and do. finitely promis...

,I nutdla & 3 en itndarit prl,11tIIIED EVERY BATURDAY ** EXCELSIOIR." SATURDAY, 2f5ir MAY, TItE fict of a large meeting of un employed persons having just been hold in Melbourne will come upon a good many persons in the light of a revela tion, It is a long time since such an occurrence took place or was possible in Victoria, and the circumstance serves to show that some great change has taken place in the condition of the country, to the detriment of what for convenience sake we may call the working classes, although this phrase is as inaccurate as it is hackneyed when applied to any given section of a community, nine tenths of whom have to work hard in one way or another for the means of subsbstence for themselves and families. However, accepting the term in its usual application to artisans and manual laborers, the present scarcity of employ ment is a startling fact, which cannot possibly be explained away. It is true that until very recently the fact of any wide.spread de...

FRIGHTFUL COACH ACCIDENT IN NEW ZEALAND, The following account of the coach ncci dent at the Ilorso Range, Now Zeonland, in which Mr Charlos Nichols, of Dalgety, Nichols, and Co., was killed, is given by the OCmaru oorrespondent of the Olago Daily Times, who writes on tile night of May 21: A frightful accident occurred to Goddard's coach when coming down tile lllampden silo of the IIorso IRango this afternoon. FAIR PLAY. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 June 1878

FAIR PLAY. (To the Editor of the Standard.) Smn,-When a man is charged with all manner of evil doings by the President and other members of the Shire Council, and that too behind his back, and with the doors closed against him, would it not, Sir, boe more just and in common fairness to allow him an opportunity to reply to such charges ? The finance committee sit with closed doors, but with open windows, orlbroken ones, which is about the same, and the crowd outside can therefore hear every word that is spoken, and as you stand in their midst you hear such remarks as " Mhy word, - you are getting it hot," or "Sam, you are in for it now." Why not open the doors and let us have a chance to reply? This would surely be more straightforward and English-like, Sir, and then I am sure business would go on better and much more satisfactorily to all parties, the Engineer Included, and so we may then have a fair show inside as well as out.-I am, &c., A CONTIACTOR.

A COMPLAINT. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 1 June 1878

A COMPLAINT. (To the Editor of the Standard.) Smn,-Allow me through the medium of your journal to call the immediate attention of the Shire Council to a very dangerous place near the residence of Mr Moon, on the terrace, caused, as everybody knows, by the fault of the council in allowing Mr Nilen to dam up the creek higher up, which has thus caused the embankment to be washed away. On Tuesday a girl went over into the cutting, and sustained injuries of a very serious nature, no less tlin a compound fracture of the arm. Who will be theo next victim to the neglect of our local parliament time alone can tell. I only hope some councillor may nall in, and then, oh I would it not at once beofenced In I or if they have to pay some heavy damages, their eyes may then be opened to the fact that such a nuisance exists within a stone's throw of where they sit to vote away the money of tile ratepayers.-Yours, &n., SAFETY.
