TUMUT. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 1 August 1868

TUMUT. (from our cobhespondent. July30tit. — We continue to hear encoura ging accounts of our littlo gold-ficld3 at Horse shoe Flat and Emu Creek. I loam from ono of tho parties at work at tho former place, that the few miners engaged there make good wages, though they have at present to contend with the snow; and at Emu Creek several parties are carrying on extensive operations, intending, when the summer sets in, to work the bed of the Little River. From the prospects obtained they are very sanguine of ultimate success, a small load of ' mullock ' and general dirt having yielded 14 dwts. of gold. One noticeable feature, which may yet lead to important results, is that the Little River gold is nearly all fine reef gold, which, as the river is fed by utreams flowing from our Alpine mountains, warrants tho conclusion that undiscovered quartz reefs exist in this neighbourhood. We had a visit from Mr. J. Coburn, inspector of schools for the district, on Monday afternoon. Ho held an exa...

NEWS OF THE WEEK. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 8 August 1868

— — WBW$-QP-THB-WEERr Wel are : glad to : leant that the most essential; repairs on the Marked-tree line between Qundagai and Tumut are being, energetically - proceeded with. The money' allotted for this object is not sufficient to do all that is required, but it is being made the most of and judicially expended by Mr. Kussell;. the superintendent. The crown of Cookamaroo hill which is composed 'of soft clay, adhesive soil almost impassable in wet weather, is to be metalled ; a portion by the fences at Big Ben Creek which is a perfect quagmire is to be similarly treated ; a very necessary cutting ia to be made on a sideling about a mile beyond the South Qundagai cemetry, aud some further repairs are to be effected upon a bad place of the road near Tumut. When these are effected the Marked tree line will be a much more tolerable road in wet weather than it now ia. On Tuesday a flag was triumphantly hoisted on the top of Mr M. Norton's new hotel, and to use the language of an inspired...
