(Sippg 2,a:nti ©uarTrtan, Friday, 31 si October-, 1856. AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS. After anxious waiting for many months^ we have at .length been : favored with a general Summary of the Agricultural ..Sta tistical Returns of. tlie Colony;of Victoria for the year ending 31st March, 1856,". which appeared in the Government. Gazette of the 14-th instant. We have often been told of the care be-, stowed upon.'the collection of these statis tics, and the'desire evinced to have them as accurate as possible ; and .-now. that we have the very valuable information . before ns, it makes ns the more deeply regret the; delay that has occurred in.,its production. For all practical purposes the return is absolutely valueless this season, as the seed time is over, and the farmer must now take his chance of the random cropping1 of his land, in the absence of any reliable infor mation to guide him. In former years the .statistics were col lected by the police, but a new plan was: devised last year, in....

CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the Gippts Land Guardian. : ■ -'Sale, 22ncl October, 1800. Sin,—-In'your last issue, I observe a letter signed'v"- John Wetherell," dated' from Oineo, in the preamble to which, I entirely '.'concur, and'trust that this" germ of a publication" may so germinate as to become really entitled to ,the appellation it assumes, (the Gipps Land Ou irdiau.) Thus much as a preface, now to my letter— I have not the pleasure of Mr. Wetlie roll's acquaintance, in fact, 1 know nothing of 'him,'-never- having seen him, but from the tone and bearing of his letter, I-should take him to be a mim made up of " good intentions — phrenologically speaking " wanting in locality" and " perception,"— "deficient in judgment," etc., ifec.,—but possessing a f*ir share of conscientiousness. He • certainly has exhibited a lamentable ignorance of the " geography" of this dis trict; which lias led him to put-forth state ments at vnrifince-wir.h facts,,and calculated seriously to misle...

SALE. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Guardian — 7 November 1856

, SALE.. LfROM an occasional corhespondent Two ov three police office cases of some importance have occupied the attention of the Bench here during' the past week. On Tuesday, Thomas Winsor (who the previous week had been committed for trial for a series-of brutal assaults on his wife, but allowed out on bail) was fined £10 for using obscene language of the grossest kind in the neighbourhood of the1 Royal Exchange1 Hotel. A man of the name, of Ryan, cook to Mr. Macfarlane, of Hayfield, was also, committed to . Melbourne for trial on a charge of attempted murder. The parti culars of the case, so far as I. was able to learn, are these. On Sunday^ afternoon last Ryan caught hold of a' man-named Lett (who had been only, a few hours on the station) while in the act of taking some J tea out of a pot in the kitchen, and with a carving knife, which it appears he had con : cealed in his jumper since dinner time, made two or'three thrusts at him, tried to stah him,, in fact his jumper was cut...
