After months of tribulations, church leader s trial set to begin [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

After months of tribulations, church leader s trial set to begin By Michael A. Fletcher, The Washington Post The embarrassing revelations have tumbled out one after another for a year and a half, engulfing the Rev. Henry J. Lyons in a seemingly bottomless scandal and plunging the nation's largest black religious organization into disarray. It began when Lyons' wife set fire to a $700,000 waterfront home that the minister owned with another woman. Soon, the head of the National Baptist Convention USA Inc. was connected to a dazzling array ol luxuries, including a 5.5-cara* diamond ring, a mink coat and expensive cars _ many of which he is alleged to have purchased for his multiple mistresses. It was even alleged that the reverend enjoyed puffing an occasional joint in the comfort of the bathtub. The nature of the charges may be salacious, but Florida prosecutors say Lyons is more than just a man of the cloth who fell victim to weaknesses of the flesh. Instea...

A run through the mind of a streaker [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

A run through the mind of a streaker By Ryan Van Winkle Campus Correspondent - Syracuse University College Press Exchange SYRACUSE, N.Y. (CPX) -1 can remember only one piece of advice before everything falls into madness: "Look into the eyes; maintain eye contact." I am stark naked and nervous when Joel screams, "Let's go! Naked guys, naked guys running at you!" We're heading fast down the street, pounding the pavement in a fleshy madness. "Don't look away," I think. "No fear. No fear." It's Halloween, and, despite the cold, grain alcohol and adrenaline are warming parts of me that have never seen the sun. We're huffing fast down the street, past people dressed as President Clinton, Monica Lewinsky, flappers and pirates. Joel's thin, graceful frame is directly in front of me. His arms are flailing and his bare feet thundering across the ground as the crowd cheers. Some gasp, others laugh. Some move out of the way quickly. Some are frozen in place, prompting Joel to shout at ...

UNC Students 'Patch' together film-making experience [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

UNC Students 'Patch' together film-making experience By Amy Cappiello College Press Exchange Campus Correspondent - UNCChapel Hill CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (CPX) - Word traveled fast that Universal Pictures' "Patch Adams" would be filming on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's campus in May and June. Students, faculty, administrators and local residents eager to get a behind-the-scenes look at the cast and crew, especially funny man Robin Williams, clamored for a piece of the action. What many say they got was enough experience to help them decide that movie making has its bright moments but certainly isn't all it's cracked up to be. Chosen to appear in the film after submitting a Polaroid photo of themselves, hundreds of extras getting paid only minimum wage spent one 14-hour workday shooting the film's final scene, which focuses on a graduation ceremony.and Williams' bare behind. "I arrived at the set at 5 a.m. and pretty much hung out all day," said Laura Brayton, ...

Want to teach? Signing bonuses are up to $20,000 [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

Want to teach? Signing bonuses are up to $20,000 By S.L. Wykes Knight-Ridder Newspapers Call it a gold rush, in reverse. Stanford University students who are considering teaching careers got pro sports treatment last week when Massachusetts educators came calling with $20,000 signing bonuses. Recruiting teachers from nationwide pools is increasing as districts face mounting enrollments and a graying teacher population. In recent years, New York City sent recruiters to Austria. St. Louisans have gone looking in South Africa. Texans have searched in California and Puerto Rico. Virginia officials loaded up a 32-foot recreational vehicle last summer and toured the East Coast. But the hefty signing bonus is highly unusual. Massachusetts' bonus program is just the newest addition to a range of incentives that can include low-interest housing loans, discounts at restaurants, tax credits, free bank ing and job shares with full medical benefits. Stanford was the Massachusetts team's ...

Oh, your aching back? Check your backpack [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

Oh, your aching back? Check your backpack By Amy Cappiello Campus Correspondent-UNC-Chapel Hill College Press Exchange CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (CPX) - Ever stopped to consider that your backpack might have something to do with your backache? Bags might come in an array of hip styles and colors, but with the number of back injuries rising in schools and on college campuses, physicians and chiropractors say it's important for students to consider function over form. In 1997, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that more than 240 children were treated in hospital emergency rooms for back pain related to their backpacks and book bags. More common is the gradual emergence of pain that comes after years of putting undue stress and strain on the lower back, a predicament many college students report they now face. Chas Gaertner, a chiropractor who has set up shop near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, estimates that most of his patients are much younger...

Midshipman Could Be Expelled For Sexual Misconduct [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

Midshipman Could Be Expelled For Sexual Misconduct College Press Exchange ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CPX) - The Naval Academy is taking steps to expel a midshipman who has been accused of raping a female classmate. Michael Pilson Jr. has admitted to having sex in a Naval Academy dormitory, an offense punishable by expulsion .but says his encounter with another midshipman was consensual. The woman, whose name has not been released, claims she was raped. The Academy is not seeking to expel her, The Washington Times reported Tuesday. Pilson says the woman made up the allegation to avoid being punished. He also contends that he has been treated differently than the woman because he is black, and she is white. A spokesman for the university denied that race or gender play any role in the university's investigation of what happened to the woman one night last July. Academy officials say they will not discuss the case further because of privacy regulations. A military judge threw out three cr...

Chuck and Ginny's: good home cookin' [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

Chuck and Ginny's: good home cookin' by Roger Burlingamc staff writer 1 recently visited a small Italian restaurant called Chuck and Ginny's. located on 5th and Cascade streets. I was tipped off to its existence by a request sent lo the Beacon via E-mail. I was informed that it was the best Italian eatery in the city; if it's not the best, it's pretty darn close. The atmosphere was great. When we first walked in, (he place was packed and it was seat-yourself. Chuck and Ginny's is a very small restaurant with classic 70's wallpaper, and lots of latticework lor the ivy to grow completely around the dinning room. Bui the best part is that the immortal Chuck and Ginny themselves observe their patrons from their spot on the wall. We started off with deep fried mushrooms. Normally this is not a remarkable dish, but I've never seen a bigger helping of shrooms in one order, not to mention the extra tasty batter, and the fact that they were very juicy made it most definitely outstand...

Comedian Ben Bailey Cures Students' Stress at Bruno's [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

Comedian Ben Bailey Cures Students' Stress at Bruno's by Ryan Cannon staff writer On Friday, January 22, dramatic images of reading, writing, and arithmetic were dancing in the minds of Behrend students in Bruno's. Just then, an object shot out of the comedy cosmos; it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's stand-up comedian Ben Bailey! Bailey delivered exactly what those academically exhausted students were thirsting for laughter. At a time when stand-up comedians are often mediocre at best, it is difficult IO get a good laugh, Bailey's routine was surprisingly pleasing. He provided his audience with some genuine laughter. Bailey, a New Yorker, arrived at Bruno's Cafe with a wide array of weapons in his comedy arsenal. He began the evening familiarizing himself with some of the estimated 65 audience members by chatting with students about campus life here a Behrend. This enabled him to put the crowd's personality in direct aim, on which he opened fire with a barrage of jokes. Bai...

Lady Lions basketball remain undefeated in AMCC play [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

Lady Lions basketball remain undefeated in AMCC play by Jason Snyder sports editor The Behrend women's basketball team is off to a 4-0 start in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The Lady Lions downed Pitt-Bradford and Pitt-Greensburg this past week to keep them atop the AMCC standings entering the final month of the regular season. Behrend then hosted Washington and Jefferson where the women improved their overall record to 11 -6. The Lady Lions took their 2-0 conference record into Pitt-Bradford on January 20 in hopes of leaving with sole possesion of first place in the AMCC. Also weighing heavily on the minds of the Behrend women was a heartbreaking loss to Pitt-Bradford in the AMCC championship game last season, 55-53. A strong first half by the Lions saw them enter the half with a 10 point lead at 32-22. The Lions shot 44.8% (13/29) in the first half while limiting the Panthers to 29.6% (8/ 27) shooting from the field. The Panthers, however, entered the secon...

Super Bowl XXXIII shouldn't be Reeves vs. Shanahan [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 28 January 1999

Super Bowl XXXIII shouldn't be Reeves vs. Shanahan Out Of Bounds JASON SNYDER If the media's job is to find the ultimate way to destroy everything good in sports, then they are doing a masterful job with the Super Bowl. Arguably the biggest event in all of sports, the NFL could have had the two weeks before the Super Bowl to tell of the shocking Atlanta Falcons and the fact that John Elway would be playing his last game. But instead of asking Elway about his feelings toward the game and his career, the media is shooting questions about the stormy relationship Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan had in Denver years ago. The press conferences are beginning to sound more and more like a trial as the coaches are being forced to answer questions about the matter. For myself, I don't care about the bad relationship these two coaches had back when I was just learning the basics of football. Coaches all around the league, even now, have their disagreements. This isn't a new concept that ...
