No. 41i"~arI · Vot. 6. ·;: AN EDITORIAL ANSWERED An editorial Appeared in the Judith Gap Journal of last -week which caused considerable amuse ment among the taxpayer.-"living 'in the southern part of the' pro posed County of Wheatland. Sam made the assertion that this part of the territory contains nothing but sand-dunes, Caynse mountains, rim-rock, sage brush and grease wood. After reading the article if one did not know "Sam" one would immagine that he had never been ten miles from the town of Judith Gap. The proposed County of Wheat land contains about 1700 square miles, and eighty percent of this tei'ritory is good farm land; be tween fifty and sixty thousand acres of irrigated lands, and 'forty thousand acres more susceptible to irrigation. Everybody acknow ledges that one acre of irrigated land is worth as much as' twwo to three acres of non-irrigated land in Montana. How much of this irrigated land is adjacent to Judith Gap? We are perfectly willing to admit that the land ar...

T he Haw ton News The COnt Of The Musselshell News VOL. 6. AARLOWTON. MEAGHEBR 'CU Y, MONTANA, FRIDAY, MAY 3, 19]2 No. 45 ELK ARE NOT SUFFERING Edward Rice, a grizzled rancher living near the Jackson Hole coun try, thinks that lecturers and writers in magazines are doing more damage to the Wyoming elk than the snows. He was in Butte yesterday for the first time in five years. The much talked of suffer ing among the elk in the Jackson Hole country is not as real as de picted, he says. The state legislature, he says, appropriated funds for the pur chase of hay to feed elk driven from the Yellowstone park during the periods of heavy snows. The game wintered much better than last year, he added. In Fremont county the eli fed in the valleys with cattle, while at Dubois the elk entered the corrals and fed with the stock. The dying elk that are pictured in the magazines did not die of starvation," said the old-timer, "but from old age and sickness. It is only natural that with a cold winte...
