"ANOTHER BABY." "When the wild -winter winds did blow, The bitter w nds of January, That swept with sparkhng swirls of snow The wastes of western prairie: A little child came to my arms To bring me joy or sorrow may be. And so, beset by vague alarms I sighed:" "Another baby I" Another little waif to tend, Another little helpless stranger, To lead, to feed, to fold, to fend. From every wrong and danger, . To make one anxious, make one sad, And fearful for each morrow may be With heart balf-sorrowful, half-glad, I'moancd: "Another baby I" And then I thought how nea-, how dear, The little children God hod sent us, How full they made our home of cheer, . And how their presence did content us Hard if 'but one were laid away This year or next, as might or may be. Our hearts would ache, would burn, would break, And now Another baby I Ah, so I thought! and so I said, Inecstacy of peace and pleasure, As bendine down I kissed tho head Of my last, weest, weakest treasure: "Oh, dear child of my...

FATAL SONNET.- J He wrote a sonnet, short and sweet, About bis lady's fairy feet. And placed it where 'twould catch her eye ' When she should enter, by and by. And he sang soft and he sang guy, As from the house he went away ; For he was glad of what he'd done, And thus the little sonnet run: "I hearsay lady's footsteps fall. Upon the stairs and In the hall, As llshtly as when the elves advance T Upon the green in merry dance ; It is my love, my love, my love, ' Descending from her bower above." A villain came upon the scene, Dark-browed was be, as stormy night, And raven were his locks, and green His eyes shone out w.th jealous light; He spied the sonnet, and between , Each open line be swiftly wrote, -With pencil dipped in gall and spleen, f What changed the tenorof the note; i Then no.'selessly he went away, As night does flee from bright-eyed day. Then came the' maiden, richly dressed In silk and gold, and to her breast Her two white hands were l'Rhtly pressed; And when on table...

VOLUME 5. ST. JOHNS, APACHE COUNTY, ARIZONA TERRITORY, THURSDAY, JULY IS, LS89. NUMBER 35 A Leprous Chinaman. Speaking of lepers, a gentleman who at one time resided in El Do rado count' Ka's he knows of one Chinaman at least wbose bones will never be returned to the "Flowery Kingdom," as is the custom of the Chinese in this State. A Chinese leper lived for many years at Union town, a short distance below Co loma. He was a most hideous--looking individual, bloated, discol ored and a perfect mass of putrid ity. The Chinese refused to asso ciate with him, and he lived alone in a deserted miner's cabin on the banks of the American river. He was a curiositr to behold, and few saw him save those who visited him in his lonely cabin out of curiosity and those who called and left him provisions at the door of his domi cile. His fingers fell off one by one as did also his toes, and he said his entire body was dead, he having lost all sense of touch. One day it was noticed that he did not sho...

I IX:- ttSEGEND OF MARGOUINI.' -A. Carious Venetian Custom That Keeps A Jvo a Poor tover's Fate. In the courts of Venice a curious custom lias been observed for five hundred years. When the Council o Ten, a body of men acting as a jury, brings in a sentence of death, before the presiding Judge puts on the black cap the venerable crier advances and cries three times in a loud voice, "Eecordatevi del povera Marcolini." Near the grand landing place of the gondolas are the columns of Saint Mark and Saint Theodore. Nearly all the people passing the grand land ing place pass around the columns. Only foreigners and strangers pass be tween the two slender pillars. It is the ancient place of execution, and there Marcolini met his death. Many years ago Marcolini, a young Venetian noble, paid court to the beautiful Giulietta, whose family oc cupied a palace on the same square. One night as tho dial on the clock tower marked tho early morning hour he was-returning home from a visit to his-inamo...

THE DOMESTIC COW. A Smart Touaij Man Investigates -Her UnuTnlable Traits. ; ' The poet has, from time immemo rial, eulogized the domestic Cu (Sax on), Koe (Stitch), or Cow (Modern English). He has done so without having taken the trouble to.investi , gate, those unamiablo traits in her character which it is the object of this article to criticise. He (the poet) seems only to have seen her in her Sunday ciothes, as it were, grazing in the fragrant meadows or standing at ease in the shadows of the babb'ing brooklet. 1 My hired man recently attended a firemen's picnic, not wisely, but too well; and, after repeatei drinks, he very imprudently locked horns with a larger man on the question of tariff re- j form. Need I say more? Only this: That he was assisted home by friends, I suffering from severe indisposition and with his features sadly out of re- ( pair; so that, on the following morn- ing, from a sense of duty, I arose be times to milk the domestic Cu (Sax on), just aa the first pa...

Men walk - ,-up.nnd throw in silver dollars and every sort of personal property , imaginable. A Winchester rifle and ; large nickel plated Colt's revolver were laid on the gras near me by a bowboy and an Indian, and then each goes away. It was a wager? and I thought ;they might well have confidence in titeir stakeholder mother earth.. Two ponies, tied head and head and were turned aside and left horse ag.'insl horse.
