68K," U3 !w gn gtstodiitt. ASTORIA, OEEGON: FRIDAY., .SEPTEMBER 8. 18S4 OREGON'S PRESIDENTIAL VOTE. The total vote of the United States at the last presidential election before the civil war (1860) was as follews: For Lincoln 1,806.352 For Douglas 1,375,157 For Breckinridce 945,763 For Bell 589,581 Total vote 4,776,853 From 1860 there was no presiden tial election at which every state voted till 1872. In 1864 there were eleven southern states not voting. In 18G8 Virginia, Texas, Mississippi and Florida did not vote. In 1872 all the states, thirty-seven (Colorado was not then a state), voted, with this result : For Grant 3,597,090 For Greeley 2,834,079 Total vote 6,431,169 The vote at this election was far short of a full one. The Fusion can didate, though he received the in dorsement of the Democratic nation al convention, could not control the Democratic vote in the southern Btates, as is manifest from the fact that he received majorities in only six of the sixteen. en foe gaitjj Mmmu ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY. .SEPTEMBER C, 1881 BEN BUTLERS CANDIDACY. It is pointed out that the impres sion that Butler had gone into the campaign to help Blaine is now enter tained only in the most sanguine Blaine quarters. Ho has gone in to found a third party, which he expects to become four years hence one of the two great parties, and does not care from which side his followers come. Butler's candidacy may help Blaine before the people, but the known fact that a failure to elect will be fatal to Blaine, and almost certain success for Cleveland, invests the candidacy of Butler with a serious menace to the Bepublicans. The fusions which are possible are in Bepublican or doubtful states. There will be no fusion between the Butler and Blaine forces in the south that will threaten Democratic supremacy. If the Octo ber elections should show Cleveland to be weaker in Ohio than his party has been in previous elections, fu sions will ba arranged in most of the doubtfu...

en tw gaittj gtoian. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY SEPTEMBER D.1BS1 THF INDEPENDENT VOTE. In this country there seems to bo no room for a "middle" party. Every effort to organize a third party proves a failure; and there is a great body of unattached voters, -who, having no especial connection with either of the existing organizations, form a tremendous force, standing ready at all times to cast their votes for whichever party gives the best prom isewe do not mean the best paper resolutions or the strongest platform promises, but the best assurance of good government. This unattached body has no party name, no party organization, and no party leaders. It is composed of intellectual, patri otic, conservative citizens, who love order, who own property, who are engaged in business pursuits, who favor gradual progress, who are loyal to the Union, who are content to let well enough alone, and who seek no offices, nor opportunities to make money out of government employ. This class favors econ...

tz $fa gmttj atartatt. ASTOBIA, OEEGON: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10, lS&i THE AWARD. Judge Deadt awards sixty-four thousand dollars to the citizens of Astoria and vicinity -whose skill and courage promptly rendered one year ago saved the Queen of the Pacific. None are .forgotten who helped make the saving a success; all are remembered in praise and substantial benefit and apart from the money compensation comes a feeling of pride to those who took part that their efforts are adjudged to be of value. Judge Deady's de cision is an equitable one and was only made after long and careful con sideration of the case, a case involv ing more of value than any similar suit ever before brought in any court on this coast The river is our only salvation, says The Dalles Times-Mountaineer, and with the removal of the impedi ments to navigation, a fleet of craft would soon cover the Columbia river and do the carrying trade at a much less rate than it is now done. But the query arises with some, sin...

It is the custom in theatrical life to burlesque produc tions of sterling merit. Shakes peare's tragedies and Verdi's operas; Sardou's comedies and Wagner's arias have been alike burlesqued. The spirit of burlesque now seems to pervade politics. The only difference between the theatrical and political masquerades is that on the stage the actors know that they are masquera ding; before the political footlights the attempted actors don't know that they are masquerading. They appear to be in earnest The matter of nominating presi dential candidates is the latest bur lesque. It seems to be a favorite amusement, though the earnestness of the parties who take part suggests a serious and solemn affair. Pomeroy, St. John, and one or two other side show leaders, have been placed in nomination with all due dec...
