Being a Supplement to regular edition for Thanksgiving Week for 1877. ' Till ASH TILiiiHSPInl JUa Why the Rooster Wouldn't Die. A VERY STRANGE AFFAIR. Listen, my boy, and you shall know, A thing that happened a long time ago, When 1 was a boy, not as large as you, And the youngest of all the children, too; I laugh even now as I think it o'er, And the more I think, I laugh the more. '') wasthe chilly eve of an autumn day, We were all in the kitchen, cheery and gay, . The fire burned bright on the old brick hearth, And its cheerful light gave zest to our mirth; My eldest sister, addressing me. And stopping at once my mirthful glee: "To-morrow's. Thanksgiving, you know," said she, "We rr.ust kill the chickens to-night, you see; Now light the lantern and come' with me, I will wring their necks until they are dead, And have them all dressed ere we go to bed." So the old huge lantern made of tin, Punched full of holes, and a candle within, Put in its appearance in a shorter time Than it t...

HOME HTJET. If I had known in the morning How wearily all the day The words unkind Would trouble my mind I said when I went away, I had been more careful, darling, , Nor given you heedless pain; But we vex "our own" . . With look and tone We may never take back again. For though in the quiet evening ' I may give you the kiss of pece, . Yet it might be That never for me The pain of the heart should cease! How many go forth in the morning That never come home at night! And hearts have broken By harsh words spoken, That sorrow can ne'er set right. We have careful thought for the stranger, And smiles for the sometime guest; But oft for "our own" The bitter tcne, Though we love "our own" the best.' Ah! lips with curse impatient! Ah! brow, with that look of scorn! 'Twere a cruel fate, Were the night too late To undo the work of morn. Regetta's Thanksgiving From the New York Observer. THE TELEGRAPH. Qffle 128 Main Street ASHTABULA. OHIO. Friday Morning, Dec. 21st, 1877. Both House of Congress have adjourned to January 10, 1878. Senator Gordon is disseminating a be lief that a steady diet of reconciliation causes biliousness. The El Paso fighting has nothing to do with Mexican raids; it grew out of a race dispute for the possession of salt lakes in Texas. The President has named Ex-Governor MCorrneek as Commissioner General to the Paris Exhibition; and the choice is hearti ly endorsed by the Press. ' It looks to the impartial observer, says the Tribune, very much as if the time baa arrived for the South to give the Adminis ration a "chance" to justify its generous confidence. The incoming Legislature of Mississippi will contain four colored members. Three of them were elected as Democrats and one as a Republican. The Senate only contains one Republican the House ten. It is a Legislature so unanimous as to be danger ous to the ruling party. Dissensions and discords...
