This expression of sentiment was manifested by all politi cal parties during our late Presidential election, and may he regarded as the universal deslio of the people. We did not then , nor do we now so well agree as to the propriety of paying the National debt, but believing as u great mass of the American people do, that the debt should be paid to the last dollar, the money which is collected from every citizen for this purpose should not bo squandered by the government, in ue U'js expenditures.
