K;:nth AisitTica. [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 26 April 1850

South America The attention of the civilized world appears to be attracted at the present period to the South American continent and the western Pacific coast From the time when Christopher Columbus first entered the gulf of Paria by the strait called the Dragon's Mouth, on the first of August, 1498 in his voyage of discovery, up to the middle of the nineteenth century South America, and especially that portion of the continent verging on the Pacific slope, has lain almost dormant and in a state of nature It is true', under the government of Ferdinand, old Spain aware of the great riches, power and grandeur which the acquisition of such a country must add to her renown, undertook its conquest and occupancy; Settlements were made at various points of the compass, and after a suceession of sanguinary wars with the natives, the Spaniards finally succeeded in getting a permanent foothold upon the main land. After being firmly located in a country blessed with a soil and climate, surpass...

Agricultural. [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 29 April 1850

Agricultural. On no other subject concerning the capabilities of our State does greater misapprehension prevail. The absurd reports circulated, owe their source chiefly to the crude correspondence that teems through the columns of the press on the Atlantic side, and which springs from the fond ambition of parents and friends to see their pet Sams and Petes in print. There are comparatively few whose opportunities for observation and research entitle their views on this point to the confidence of those who might base any movements on their assumed correctness. A large proportion of our people are devoted to mining, which requires them to bi OOttlned to to the gold regions or the towns which have principal intercourse therewith. Most of these, too, come to tho country by sea, and arriving in San Francisco, take Ihoir departure- thence duuetly for the divings. This is the very journey which, in the dry season especially, is calculated to produce the most unpropitious estimate of tho ch...

Tlie Hit—■, [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 29 April 1850

Tlie Hit— ■, Mr. John Berg has lately returned from Trinity. Ho went from here a short time ago, with a party of five men with seven mules. The trip each way consumed sixteen days Ho report* the gold abundant in the beds and bars of the streams, but very fine indeed' requiring the use of quicksilver machines, of which he takes four back With him. There are a great many more people there than ho expected to find ; none of them knew anything of the distance to the coast, but some Wtn getting ready to explore the river down. — Met no snow on the way, and saw but two Indians. Provisions at the diggings, $2,50 per pound. A great disposition towards the Middle Fork of the American is manifested ; some six thousand are said to be high up there among the snows, waiting the waters to subside, to commence operations. At IMacerville, the whole town, almost, is dug over. They think they hare found an old bed where the Creek used to ran. At the depth of from 6 to 12 feet, excellent diggings are ...

Present Politic* and the Prospective [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 29 April 1850

Present Politic* and the Prospective A California correspondent of the Xeie York Observer in a letter to that paper dated in this city, January 29, takes occasion to remark concerning; the press of San Francisco, that both the Alta California and Pa- \ >• are in politics Democratic. Of course our friends of that city can best defend their interests against unfounded allegations such as this, and we can only say whether or not the politics of the latter paper are generally understood, Ihere is nothing; clearer in the world to the public mind here and elsewhere, than the uncompromising neutrality of the Alta California, and which begun co-existent 'vith the birth of that journal. For our remaining contemporaries in the country, we can assure friend? of the press abroad, that no party distinction at preseßt exists except in the instance cited, nor is it probable that the requirements of political contests in California for some time to come, will induce the undertaking of es...

The Pacific Courier. [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 29 April 1850

The Pacific Courier. The following article appears in the Alta California of the 26th. It sums up the case alluded to in another column : Some of our readers may recollect that we took occasion some time since to rebuke the presumption with which the proprietor of the " Pacific Courier" announced that he had commenced the publication of a Whig newspaper of that name in Francisco. In justice to ourselves and our cotemporaries we felt compelled to expose the assumption, arrogance, egotism and ignorance displayed in the " Extra," which was circulated so Freely. We feel now in duty bound to allude to to the Courier — of which we have not yet boon able to Mi the first number— once more. The Washington Union, some time since, alluded to that paper, and its proprietors, Messrs. Crane and Rice, in no very flattering terms. This called forth a letter from Mr. Rice, datedJJoston, Fobrury, 1850, which we find in the National Intelligencer, of the 25th of that month. And upon the contents of th...
