Lines written for the California Star. Tis eve, and to the distant hills, The setting sun a purple gives ; And weary day, seems glad to rest Calmly on quiet evening's breast. Now through the woods, the red light gleams O'er many a bubbling fount and stream ; Lighting lbs boughs that bend to lav Their green leaves in as* cooling wave. See in the west, the galiieu light Spark!:* in many a streamer bright: Then ciirijr'd on the blue expanse Of yonder lake, the bright b>-ams dance. — 'I ill, resting on the ancient tower, Just peeping from yon leafy bawaf ; They make each ruined turret gay, As though a thing of yesterday. 1 1. vxind of the ve»iM-r be!!, A< on the brrn--, it-i solemn swell Is borne acres* the valley wide ; Aad echoed from tbe mountain aid* — And a* it tolls, it seems to say— •Reni mber tbe close of a longer day : Turn pilgrim on life's weary way. its ministry and representative men, for Christ's Legislative Dignity. — A Boston paper religious press has the following : ¶ To the shame of the church it must be spoken, the foremost men in some of our philanthropic movements, in the interpretation of the spirit of the age, in the practical applications of Christianity, in the reformation of abuses, in the vindication of the rights of man, are men who make no profession, and whom we have no reason to believe to be experimentally acquainted with Christianity. The church has pusilanimously left not only the working oar, but the very reins of certain necessary reforms of the day in the hands of men, who if not before inimical to Christianity, will be made so by Christianity's neglect of what it is its proper mission to look after. They are doing practically with all their might, for humanity's sake, what the church ought to be doing as heartily, through its ministry and representative men, for Christ's sake. ¶ And if they succeed, as...
