SAN FRANCISCO, AUGUST 16, 1849. Eastern News Items. THE CHOLERA ON THE RIO GRANDE. — The Albany Atlas of Friday gives extracts of a letter received by a gentleman in that city from a brother in the west who has returned from the Rio Grande, after an unsuccessful attempt reach California, in which he speaks of the ravages of the cholera as follows: " The deaths from the terrible scourge, as near as I can estimate, in the vicinity of the Rio Grande, were about 4000, out of a population of 20,000, or one in five. I have frequently seen strong, hearty men, in health one day, and a corpse beforre the next morning's sun." CHOLERA IN CHICAGO. — The Chicago Journal of the 11th inst., says the Board of Health of that city have published a report, in which it is stated that there have been twenty cases since the 2d inst., and twelve deaths ; that of this number, nearly every one was among the foreign residents and transient population, who had neglected proper remedies and preventives, and th...

SACRAMENTO HOSPITAL. — At the large adobe building near Sutter's Fort, lately occupied by S. Brannan &amp;amp; Co. The subscribers beg leave to inform the public that the above large and commodious building having been thoroughly refitted and furnished as a Hospital, is now open for the reception of patients. This is believed to be better adapted to such a purpose than any other house in the country, being spacious, cool, and well ventilated; and not the least of its recommendations is to be found in a well of most excellent water, lately sunk on the premises. Good nurses and attendants, and a good cook will be provided, and no pains will be spared to supply the establishment with every comfort and convenience for the sick, that can be found in California. Public Meeting at Monterey. At a large and respectable meeting of the citizens of Monterey, held at the Town Hall, on the 11th inst., Milton Little, Esq., was called to the Chair, and Dr. McKee appointed Secretary. The following resolution was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed to inquire into the circumstances under which the steamer Panama passed the town of Monterey, without stopping to deliver her mail; and that the said committee be authorised to report the facts, if, in their opinion their importance demand it, to the proper department of the United States Govrernment.
