Visalia Seminary Hymn. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 28 April 1860

Visalia Seminary Hymn. JAMES WEBB, M. D. Dedicated to the Ofllcers and Students of Visalia Seminary. Let science and religion join, In harmony and love ; Each, shows the other is devine, And comes from God above. True science, is that knowledge pure, Of well attested facts j And true religion, will endure, The test that God directs. Let reason be the umpire now; For the aged and the youth— To reason's dictates, wisely bow, For reason shows the truth. When Wisdom opens Reason's age, All things are seen for good ; Then man from nature looks on high, And sees, and knows his God. As knowledge dpens up the mind, This precept is enforced — Religion, and sweet Science joined, Should never be divorced. Then take your Bible in your hand, Ye lovely saints of God ; And keep sweet nautrc's just command, Then, find all that is good. The Scripture is God's comment given, On Nature's holy word, And points ob?dicnt souls to Heaven, Where they will find reward. Improve the talent you possess, Whatev...

News From Mono Lake. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 28 April 1860

News From Mono Lake. We fire now able to furnish our readers with late and reliable news from this newgold region. Two gentlemen who left here the 10th of March, Mr. N. A. Hicks, of the firm of Johnson & Hicks, of Visalia, and Mr. E. W. Heath, of the vicinity of Woodville, returned here a few days since. They bring the most encouraging reports of the mines, and believe they arc extensive as well as rich. Those gentlemen and their companions left here with a heavy wagon drawn by four small mules, and loaded with twenty-five hundred pounds of provisions. They met with no difficulty whatever, except that they had to pack their load over Greenhorn Mountain. With this single exception they found no hills but what their team could pull the load as easily as upon level ground. They were the first to reach the Lake this Spring. Grass and water was plenty all the way, except abovt forty miles next to the Lake, where the snow had just disappeared, and the grass had not yet started...

From Fresno City. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 28 April 1860

From Fresno City. April 23d, 1860 Mr. EDITOR :—Presuming that a little more scribbling from this isolated portion of the earth will be refreshing, we forward one of our irregular "dispatches."' Matters generally throughout the county are now "statu quo" which quiet state of affairs is sometimes as much conducive to health as prosperity. Everything is supposed to be in a flourishing condition. Grass and otherj vegetation is magnificent. Some of our residents are raising hogs and some are raising "the devil," although the former is supposed to be the most profitable crop. All is quiet, peace and harmony. Pork is "firm"—whiskey "unstable," especially upon the advent "in transitu" of any of the thirsty citizens of San Francisco. They invariably express great astonishment at the extreme diziness of the climate of the valley. Fresno City, alias "Phantom" is improving wonderfully and its previous extensive area has been increased by the addition of a store-house 24 by 40—we forget the alti...

Tulare County. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 28 April 1860

Tulare County. Whilst we entertain the profoundest respect for all other portions of our commonwealth —it is with more than ordinary pride that we record the growing prospects of our own county. And in drawing the line of demarkation that by nature distinguishes the varied sections of our State, no invidiousness shall ever creep in to mar the feelings of the most zealous patriot of any other locality. Agriculture, from the days of Cain, has been the chief employment of man. The nutriment of human life comes from that; source. The laborer in every other vocation ' depends upon the tiller of the soil for the sustenance of life, and when he fails to produce an adequate amount for human consumption, the hopes, ends, and ambition of human energies sink into nothingness — pride, glory, ar >d pomp are leveled with the present —the highest aims of mechanism, politics, and personal ambition lose their strong hold—the phantom ot earthly gloryits basis. The prospects of PERMANENCY i...
