Editors.— My last letter was dated January 3d . the day following, unexpectedly left this place, for the Merced river, and consequently did not communicate the result of the Chilean difficulty on the Mokelumne according to promise It appears that after having been regularly tried, three of the ringleadors of the gang of Chileans who perpetrated tho outrage upon tho Americans of tne lowa Camp were shot, and the balance were flogged and banished from the mines. But of this you have no doubt been advisod Order is restored — there are no Chileans working on tho Mokelumne, and there is little danger of any further difficulty. In a former letter I stated that tho San Joaquin was "said to be full of scrub-oak snags and sand bars," and that it could not bo successfully navigated by steamboats until cleared.
