THC # BRAND The Brand Offlcl J o urn ndle INCORPORATION DISSOLVED. At the corporation annulment election held last Saturday the vote stood 84 for annulment and 41 against. There was some doubt ex- pressed as to whether a majority or two-thirds vote was necessary to an- nul the incorporation, but Satur- day's vote puts all questions of that nature in the shade. We have no comment to make on the result of the election and while being as strongly in favor of incorporation as ever, we feel that the majority of the citizens ought to rule, and we abide by their decision and will con- tinue to work as hard as ever for the upbuilding of Hereford and sur- rounding country and trust that every other citizen of the town, whether favoring or opposing corpo- ration, will do the same. The muddy condition of our streets forcibly calls attention to the great need of suitable side and cross walks on our streets, especially on the main thoroughfares. OUR citizens should not lose sight of the fact tha...

THE # BRAND W. C.T. U. COLUMN. CONTRIBUTED. The Saloons Must Go. Why? 1. Because it is God's enemy. 2. Because its foundation is in human lust. 3. Because it cannot stand before the better instincts of manhood when they are once aroused. 4. Because its presence is a bar to highest progress. When? 1. When a united christian senti- ment says "Go," to the saloon it will depart. 2. When men realize that they are their brothers' keepers. 3. When our religions become real enough to make us true humani- tarians. 4. When the disciples get ready to obey all the commands of their master. By Whom? 1. The dominant knightliness of manhood, when awaked, will put the saloon to a swift death. 2. The prayers of the common motherhood are hastening the destruction of this arch enemy of all sons. 3. The power of the highest will yet be displayed upon this chief in- strument of Satan. 4. The voters who love their lord more than political party will be the saloon's executioner.—For- ward. THE # BRAND BRICK MAKING QUALITIES. Hereford Dirt, in the Opinion of Ex. perts, Would Make Fine Brick. There has been a great deal of talk in the past as to the brick mak- ing qualities of Hereford dirt. Everyone who has had any ex- perience in that line seems to be of the opinion that our dirt will make an exceptional fine quality of brick. Sometime ago a quantity of this dirt was sent to the brick works at Den- ton, the managers thereof agreeing, for a certain price, to give it a fair test, but instead of so doing, placed it in a kiln with fire brick dirt, and the result was that Hereford's dirt was melted, resembling, after being taking from the kiln, iron ore more than anything else. However, we understand that another trial is soon to be made by the Hereford Planing Mill and Con- struction Company, who will ship this dirt to be tested. After having given the Hereford dirt a fair test, should the experiment be successful, a company will at once be organized and a plant for brick...

THE # BRAND The Brand Official Organ of Dm!1 Smith County Official Organ of Castro County A Weekly Journal Devoted to the Interests of the Panhandle Country of Texas r. L. VANDERBURGH Editor and PublisHar AN UNTRUTH. No prohibition town ever gives its paper' a decent support. They are not the class of people who believe in printer's ink. Whitewright is a very good example of this truism.— Denison Gazatteer. We wish to refute the above state- ment in the most emphatic terms, and as an example we point with pride to Hereford and The Brand. Prohibition has been in effect in Deaf Smith county for the past two years and during that time Hereford and The Brand has continued to grow like the fabled Jack's bean- stalk. At the time the county went dry, Hereford, the county seat, was a town of far less than 1000 inhabi- tants and The Brand's equipment consisted of one job press (on which we printed our paper), one cabinet of display type, two cases of body type, small paper cutter and other n...
