Supplement to the Hobart Town Gazette. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 9 1826. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 2 September 1826

SUPLEMENT TO THE HOBART TOWN GAZETTE. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER, 9, 1826.       RUNAWAYS.- Every vessel which   leaves the Harbour, instructs us more and more of the necessity of a strict scrutiny to prevent runaways. Attempts at escape   are more particularly made on board of whaling ships, which, proceeding to ports where there is no constituted authority or magistrate, afford every facility, as at   New Zealand, Otabeite, and the various ports in the islands of the Southern Paci- fic, where these vessels usually touch. It is well known that in New Zealand alone, above 100 runaways from sentence in these colonies are now at large with im- punity. These being characters of the worst description must do our nation considerable prejudice in the eyes of the brave and independent natives of that country, who are well able to discriminate between good and bad conduct, but can not be expected to make that distinction...

The first arduous and difficult season has been overcome oy the greater part of the Settlers. Every succeeding day brings some improvement, or adds something to the means of comfort and independence. By a course of persevering and prudent measures, that chief bane to the Colony - the bushrangers - has been completely annihilated; and what is more, the cowardice insepa- rable to crime has been exposed on the one hand, and the native spirit of self-defence, of courageous integrity among the Colonists has been roused 0n the other, so that we may safely reckon that the death-b...

MISCELLANY, ORIGINAL AND SELECT. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 2 September 1826

MISCELLANY, . ORIGINAL AND SELECT. THE REVIEWS.-The three principal Quarterly publi- cations of the day, calling themselves Reviews, are any thing but critical notices of books. They have not eveu a claim to independent principles in their treatment of those subjects wbich'do employ their pen. The Edin- burgh Review is a periodical collection of dissertations, conducted by,Mr. Macculloch with Brougham, Macin- tosh, and Jeffery couti ibutors, mixing tip a few consti- tutional ideas with subjects tending to promote the private interests, of certain individuals who assume to themselves the title of Whigs. The Quarterly Review, on equally confined grounds, advocates a few aristocratic truths in order to advance the schemes of a junto calling 'itself Tory, and is conducted by "Mr. Coleridge, with the assistance of Southey, Croker," and Milman. And, îastlv, the Westminster Review, carrying the trade to n stiîl higher pitch, touches ever and anon on Magna ?Charta and the Bill of Rights, in...
