A VISION OF JUDGMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 20 June 1913

A VISION OF JUDGMENT. Josiah Henry WilkinB had a nifty baby grand On which he syncopated with a turie in either hand, And as he pounded blithely on fie keys one afternoon He hit upon the measure for a fas cinating tune: . . A raggy bit o£ ragtime which he hap pened to compose That put a magic turKoy-trotting tic kle in the toes! It sold a million copies in the 3tores and on the street, And when the people heard it they went crazy in the feet; The merchant turkey-trotted a3 he made his way to work, And found his secretary turkey-trot ting with the. clerk. The waiter turkey-trotted as lie en tered with a tray, The copper on the corner turkej - • trotted night and day The barber turkey-trotted as he start ed in to shave, -A funeral procession turkey-trotted to the grave; The firemen turkey-trotted as they hastened to a fire, ■The parson turkey-trotted while his. turkey-trotting choir ! ARTFULLY WOOED. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 20 June 1913

ARTFULLY WOOED. His name was John Erastus Bates, and hers Samantha Stone. He yearn ed to mix their earthly fates, >.o spoony had he grown. At first the fair Sumantlia gave unqualified as sent, but afterwards she did behave most rashly violent. She said she only was ill jest; John Bates she'd never wed; she hadn't seen in east or west so great a dunderhead. So John determined he would try all arts of which he knew. He'd storm and threaten, weep and sigh, and swear till all was blue. But still Samantha did not yield; her soul was adamant. Against his prayers her heart was steeled; she let him tear and rant. At last one day Bates came to her, decision in his eye. And on his face a pallid blue, like cloud on summer sky. "And is your judgment final now?" he asked Sanantha Stone. "For if you scorn me yet, I vow 1 will not live—alone." Samantha, like most 'women, had a sentimental side.' This tragic spout ing made her glad, and glorified her pride. A packet then John opened up, marked w...

LADIES' LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 20 June 1913

LADIES' LETTEK. By "Ireue." • I The dainty llltlo bride of last weeit, Mrs. Archie Brown (Miss Ruby Thom as), must have been proud of her tail young husband (Mr. Archibald Brown) when he made his wedding speech, Cor although he has not yet reached his quarter century he spoko well, and his speech was one that many much older bridegrooms could with advantage take as a model. They do make such a show of themselves generally, you know, Rosalind. This is q,uite a girl and boy marriage, for the dainty petite bride is still in her teens. She is somewhere about live feet,' I should say, while the bride groom is over six feet. •- Still, they looked a very well-matched couple as they came down the aisle. The after function, which took place at the Turn Verein Hall, was such a nice and well-managed affair, where the guests seated in comfort had a- genu ine breakfast, or rather, dinner, as it was after, six o'clock. And there were only two toasts, such a splendid idea, for one does become bored...

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 20 June 1913

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES Because a shivering little black-ami tan terrier was substituted and cast for the part o£ a life-saving St. Bernard in a melodrama at Berwick, Penn. (says the Now York "Tribune"), Geo. Crone, of NVilkesbarre, laughed so long and heartily that both audience and actors united in efforts to quiet him, and when he persisted in his merriment lie was arrested. Crone was arraigned in the Police Court, and, still laughing, paid a heavy fine, declaring between giggles that it was •the funniest show he ever saw. The St. Bernard which was cast to rescue the hero from the snow-clad Alps was indisposed, and at the last mo ment the property man substitute! the tiny black-and-tan. Throughout the State of Kansas a canvass has been made to obtain the opinions of women and girls as to their ideal man-size, height, weight, moral and physical craracteristics ami everything else being taken into con sideration. Nothing new was dis covered, the contradictory sex main taining its reputation. A man, that was the one desideratum, an ideal man if possible, but failing that, a man of some sort. As usual, tall girls' ideals ran to short men, short girls' to tall men, plump women liked thin men, and the lean female kind prefer red plump men. Good looks went for nix, and the general impression left by the report is—a man of any sort rather than none a...

Valedictory. [Newspaper Article] — The Urana Independent and Clear Hills Standard — 20 June 1913

Valedictory; It being his last meeting in official capacity as Stock Inspec tor to the Urana P.P. Board, the Chairman and Directors of the Board on Monday took the oppor tunity of addressing a, lew words to Mr Norman Gibson. Mr Gibson has held the position for four years or more, and, not withstanding an unsettled state of affairs previous to his coming, managed to gain the favor of the Board and landholders in general throughout the district. He has now resigned from the Depart ment altogether and intends fol lowing pastoral pursuits. The Board Directors all spoke very highly of Mr Gibson, and Mr Carroll's words seemed to fit the necessary, that it had ' been a pleasure to work with him. Following the Board meeting a dinner was tendered to Mr Gibson at Mrs Tracey's hotel, when a number of the large ratepayers of the Board were present, and each added a few remarks to the many already spoken. It was announced that an ad dress was in the making, but as the order had not been complete...
