THE COMING SPRING. [Newspaper Article] — Adelaide Morning Chronicle — 16 September 1852

THE COMING SPRING. THE Colony stands just now in a strange i position. Tho wisest prophet amongst us is puzzled to forecast our future j and though seers of inferior sagacity are positive enough, in their predictions, they contradict each the other so broadly, that from their babel of utterances no intelligible oracle issues. Perhaps the Poet would indicate our position more accurately than the Prophet, were he to describe the colony as; a^gallant ship that balbeen jong tost opón, a troubled sea,-had recently battled with' I a furious storm,-was now riding easily is j a, lull of the tempest,-but with a louring sjry and raging ocean still tbreateumg, and dangerous shoals lying in her course. Oar prospects had.been sufficiently obscured by tte effects of gold Soding at a distance of 400 miles, and it was not easy to say what struggles would yet be entailed upon ds thereby. But our future is involved in aggravated uncertainty by the discovery of gold fields at our very doors ; and the ...

LETTES II. Melbourne, 2nd September, 1852. [Newspaper Article] — Adelaide Morning Chronicle — 16 September 1852

LETTES IL Melbourne, 2nd September, 1852. The discovery of gold in South Australia has caused some sensation here, and the value or rather the enormous price put on property, has received a check ; but whatever may be its ultimate effect on South Australia, this dis- covery must at prese J t be a blessing to thou- sands who intended coming h ere from Adelaide, and indeed to the thousands arriving from other places. The influx of people into Mel- bourne lately has been so great that accommo- dation cannot be found even by paying the most exorbitant prices, and you will see people wandering, about the streets all day seeking for j a bed to ßleep on at night. When you consider that we have four or five vessels in a day arriving from the British Isles, Singapore, New York, the neighbouring Colonies, itc, with hundreds of iresh people, you caa fancy, or rather it is impossible to conceive the misery they must endure; and if to these had been added the population of South Australia, the e...

ADELAIDE GOLD CIRCULAR [Newspaper Article] — Adelaide Morning Chronicle — 20 September 1852

ADELAIDE GOLD CIRCULAR Tbere have been no important news from the i Echunga Diggings during the week until to-day, the I quantities procured being still considered limited 1 and insufficient to stop the steady tide of emigration to Melbourne. Some beautiful specimens of quartz I conglomerate were exhibited in the Kio ii an ge a few ! days ago, said to have been got within a few feet of j the surface. To-day, however, intelligence brought ! by Mr Murray, the Assistant Commissioner, is to ; the effect that thc gold is now being got tu larger ' quantities. One party is said to have weighed S3 ; ounces as the produce of their labour, but I am not aware bow long they had been working ; the gold ' has been got on the top of the pipe-clay, about 7 j feet from the surface, and from one load of stuff no less than 15 ounces had been obtained on washing, i Whatever may be the effect of 6uch results, in keeping our male population in the colony, it is ' clear that a considerable majority of the...

MYTHOLOGY AND DEMOCRACY. [Newspaper Article] — Adelaide Morning Chronicle — 20 September 1852

MYTHOLOGY AND DEMOCRACY. WE know not by what mysterious affinities South Australian politics are connected with Scandinavian mythology. Neither can we tell by what occult power the supreme divinity of the old No'semen in- fluences our representative legislators. Indeed, we are not aware that Odin was supposed to entertain any regard for " the j people" further than as they afforded him j opportunities for exhibiting his prowess by ' slaughtering thousands at a blow. Certain, j however, it is, that our legislative ! Woden's-days appear to be peculiarly j favourable to the development of j democratic opinion among our senators. ! On that day their patriotism seems to j culminate, and speds radiance on the most commonplace topic. It was on a Wednes- day that the first representative Council assembled in the colony j on a Wednesday the Council stopped the supplies by refusing to vote the Estimates until certain de- mands had been complied with ; on Wed- nesday last the Council virtually...
