THE CONCERT AND BALL. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser — 1 June 1889

TIIH COSCERIT AND BAlh. OF the concert and ball, held in the evening, we need simply say it was the best ever held in Morwell, and would do credit' to towns of much more inlmor tance. M'rs. Mason (soprano) in the songs " Kate O'Shane." and " The last Rose. of Summer" was vociferously applaetlrd, while Miss Josephine O'Brien's "The Irish Emigrant," and "The Minstrel Boy" fairly brought down'the house. Miss Lee's rendition of " The Dashing White Sargeant,"and " Steer my Iarque for Erin's Isle," in a clear sopranp voice, were enthusiastically received, while the little Misses Lee in a dinlngue and Sailor's lHornpipe showed a proficiency astonishing for their age, aind were recalled again and again before the ahdiefi?e cohld he satisfied. ,Miss Downey sang " Barney take me irolie a.aien," and "I'll take you home Kathleim " vdry siveetly, while dur local favorite, Miss Kinder, 'exelled herself lii "Killfrnoy." S31ORWELL V. WALHFIALLA. On Saturday last the above tenins mnet, but owiitg to an unfortunate 'mis isnp the 'ntoe was tinot finished. About the middle of the second quarter, with the score standing Morwell, 1 goal 1 behind; \Valhalla, 1 behind, Geo. Munro collided with Lavery, a Walialla man, with the result that. the latter fell heavily and for a few uinates was insensible, and then raelying he pluckily expressiod a desire to go on playing. The captain, however, evidently desiring to introduce setihething novel into the game of foot Iall, ihsserted his authority, and called his litn dff thA fie'd. Perhaps it never struck the "Walhalla leader that his team tilight not be of his opinion, that a body of men were made to loolc foolish because ihe bouldnt control his irascibility, and initllgerl in an idiotic whim. We are glad, however, to state that although " our benys " and the public (who paid at thlregate) were done out of an afternoon's. sport, everyone agreed that the Walhalla .m...

THE Morwell Advertiser. SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 1889. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser — 1 June 1889

THE SATURDAY, JUNE i, 1889.r IT is satisfactory to note that the dairy men of the district have shown a bold front to the enemy, in their empathic disapproval of the stand taken up by the newly-lcedged Victorian Dairy Produce Buyers' Association, in Melbourne. It is to be sincerely hoped that this combin ation may only prove the spark that is to ignite a long smouldering fire. For years farmers hare remained inert while octopus-like Melbourne buyers have curtailed their privileges with such rapidity that they now find a dairyman's life is not all " beer and skittles," or, in the words of GILBsnr and SOULVAoX, "is nota happy one." What with the loss of boxes, exchanges. oni cheqies,; &c., no very great profit accrues to the man who turns light into day to earn his bread, and yet we find the remorseless moneo grabbers of the metropolis dlemanding, a futher diminuition of profit by exacting a half-pound sample to be supplied free from each box;- Mr. ,Jnux VAnucn and hiis follor...
