No title [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 19 May 1877

The Colonial Treasurer has laid on the table of the Assembly, copies of correspon dence respecting the claims for the convey ance of emigrants from the United States to Sydney, from which it appears that the first enstallment of American mechanics brought over to compete with the colonists, has ex ceeded the average cost per head of those sent from England. Other vessels are expected from America, and special efforts are being made to encourage emigration from Europe. For some time past the Agent-General for Hew South Wales has been unusually busy despatching ships. One of which has reached Sydney with three hundred and thirty-two souls. Similar ship loads are to follow in each succeeding month. The few unmarried females on board the Dalhousie were eagerly sought after, which leads to the belief that a supply of domestic servants is needed. Such cannot be said of the other classes, whose pro spects at best, are but dubious. Thirty-six married men, with their wives and numerous child...

Local Intelligence. CHURCH OF ENGLAND—LAYING THE FOUNDATION-STONE OF THE NEW BUILDING. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 26 May 1877

Local Intelligence. CHURCH OF ENGLAND— LAYING THE FOUNDATION-STONE OF THE NEW BUILDING. The ceremony of laying the foundation-stone of the new building for the Church of England, was performed on Thursday last (Queen's Birthday). The weather, which had been very wet for thirty-six hours previously, and continued threatening up to almost the last moment, cleared up at noon, and the sun shone out brightly, tending greatly to enliven the scene. There was a large muster upon the ground, the fair sex and children being in great strength. At 1 o'clock (an hour after the advertised time) the members of the Masonic, Oddfellows, Sons of Tem perance, and Miners lodges marched on to the ground, in full regalia, and formed upon the site of the proposed building, above which were floating banners, bearing, among others, the following mottoes : — ' Behold I build an house in the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it to him ' This stone to Thee in faith we lay ; we build the temple, Lord to thee...
