NARRACAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 21 October 1880

NARtRACAN. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) A bachelor's ball was given here on Friday evening last, and the weather being favorable, it was a great success. The room was well filled, and dancing to the strains of some excellent music :liscoursed by Mr. Gamble in his well known style was kept up till daylight. A railway league has been formed here under the presidency of Mr. R. S. Stewart, with Mr. T. S. Savige as secretary. Its object is to get the route of the Mirboo railway taken along the valley of the Narracan, and across McDonald's Track to MirbooL A deputation from the league visited Melbourne about a month ago, in or der to bring under the notice of the Commissioner of Railways the pro posed route. The Minister appeared to look favorably on the scheme, and promised to send Mr. Walton this way to examine the route and report as to its feasibility. Mr. Walton has, how ever, not yet made his appearance, and the people here are getting impa tient. In the mean time, several mem bers...

A RUSSIAN DESPOT TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 21 October 1880

A RUSSIAN DESPOT TWO HUN DRED YEARS AGO. " But the commands of this slightly vexatious despot (Ivan) seemed at times to have puzzled even his most faithful commissioners, for on one occasion, having sent for a nobleman of Casan, called Pie. sheave ?which is, being interpreted, Bald), the Vayod, mistaking the name bf the word, sent for 150 bald-pated old men. More thaneighty or ninety, hoir. ever, he could not- get together; so he sent them np speedily to the palace, with an apology that he regretted he could find no more in his province; and desired pardon for the' short' measuire:" "The Emperor, astohished at the sight of so many bald-pate, -devoutly! crossed him. self. At last oheof the chief men ideliv ered- the letter, and the Diack showed his MIjesty the copy of tbhe letter he haid sent to the Vaved, and the mistake beiig found out, the bald-pates were made drunk for three days.and sent honce again. NARRACAN SHIRE COUNCIL. SATURDAY, 16TH OCTOBER. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 21 October 1880

NARRACAN SHIRE COUNCIL.   SATURDAY,16TH OCTOBER.   Present.-The President (S. Vary, Esq., J.P.), and Crs. Lloyd, Duma-   resq, Robinson, Wood, Hann, Miller, and Rollo. Minutes of last ordinary meeting were read, and, on the motion of Cr.   Lloyd, seconded by Cr. Hann, con-   firmed. Cr. Wood said, though he might be slightly, out of order, he desired to draw the attention of the Council to a paragraph which had appeared in the Drouin paper subsequent to the last meeting, to the effect that a severe rebuke had been administered by the   Council to Mr. Mason, the member   for the district. He (Cr. Wood) had   not been present at the last meeting, and he would therefore like to ask if the Council had censured Mr. Mason,   as he thought if they had that they had exceeded their duty. The Presi- dent said that Cr. Wood would have an opportunity of hearing amongst &n...

MESSRS. CARU AND SONS' EXHIBIT. The exhibit of Messrs Carr & Sons, Window Blind Manufacturers Spring Street-Melbourne'is a most attractivre and complete piece of woikinanship. It is in- the form of a bay window ,with imitation plaster or cement work, while inside it is papered with a Dado and decorated in white and gold. There' are"threeo windows "with, the different kinds of outsido'and: inside blinds'" The first'wo will notice is thie Hoho-Scene which is an outside blind made up of a series of hoods covered with red striped ticking, the advantage this blind has is that when let down it does not obstruct the vision but keeps - off the heat of the sun and at the same tine allows.the free passage of air ; it - has a handsome appearance, is worked from the inside and is drawn up com pactly into a box at the top of the window jamb.. The next we have to notice are the outside Venetian Shutters' to fold, which are painted green. The next is the outside Venetian Blind which is mad...

.. CO1UIESPONDENOE.. WARRAGUL TO WELSHPOOL IRAILWAY. TO THE EDIrOB OF THE OPARDIAN. Sir,-Will you permit me, through the columns of your paper, to ask. the member for South Gippsland, what has become of the Warragul to Welshpool railway ? as it seems to have disappearedfromthe Govern ment railway scheme, and why no survey (trial, flying, or any other) has ever been made, although it is well lnownu to road surveyors and: others that a very easy and practicable route is to be got along the road due south from Warragul, which ison the ridge that divides the waters flowing east to the Tarwin country and west to the LangLang? Sure!y,sir, the Liberalstrong. hold that Warragul and its surrounding district has proved itself to be is entitled to some consideration from the Government that it helped to put into power. I would also like to ask the selectors south of Warragul why they are "dreaming the muddy years away ".. instead. of agitating constitutionally for their rights in railway matter...

THE JUVENILE BERRYS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 October 1880

THE JUVENIILE BERRYS. The Age and Arous of Monday last both animadvert very severely on Mr.. Berry's conduct in- reinstating- MIe. Benjamin Berry in the 4th class-of Civil Service, andpromoting ayounger son. The article from the Age, which we reproduce below, expresses, we feel sure, the opinion of a large majority of MIr. Berry's supporters in the coun try. We regret most sincerely that, just as the t:aunts'about the Embassy business were beginning to lose their sting, from constant' repetition,' our leader should have given the Conser. vatives another platform from which to assail the Liberals in the country' On this subject the Age says:--) I We fear that there is not a Liberal in the.'country or in the House'who will not hear with pain and astonish mnent .that Mr.?. The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1880. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 October 1880

THUIRSDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1880. Tns difficulties of our position as the mouth-piece of the scattered popula tion with whose interests our own are identified, when any question anent which" a diversity of local opinion exists has to be discussed, will at once be recognised by ouir readers. We, of course, refer more particularly at the .present time .to the perplexing duty of-advising as to the action to be taken to secure sonie means of com munication for' our selectors and special recognition of our claims by the Government of the day. Last week we drew the attention of our worthy member, Mr. F. C. MAso., to the widespread feelilg of 'discontent in this part of his electorate at the apparent failure ,of the M'inister of Railways to provide for any of the much needed tramways asked' for in the Narracan and Buln -.Buln- Shires. That this feeling of discontentment is widespread there cannot be a shadow of a doubt,- but at the same time it is manifest that the feeling is the result of almo...

MR. BERRY'S FINANCIAL SCHEME. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 October 1880

MRL BERRY'S FINANCIAL SCHEME. Closing the accounts of the financial year of 1879.80 with a debit balance of £389,884, we proceed to examine how Mr. Berry proposes to meet the expenses of the current twelve months. The late period of the year at which the financial statement has been made fortunately places the Treasurer in a position to estimate from the receipts of the past sixteen weeks, what may be fairly anticipated to be obtained during the remainder of the year.. Mr. Borry assured the House last night that more than ordinary care.had been taken this year to keep the estimated revenue within the bounds of what might, even under'niore than ordinarily unfavor able circumstances, be realised. The estimates of ordinary revenue are set down at £,910,364. Credit'is taken for the sum just received from the'suc cessful issue of Treasury bonds, and there are certain rezoups from loans, which bring up the gross amount to £5,746,477, of which £156,500 is to be derived from .new taxation. ...

AT THE EXHIBITION. THE VICTORIAN COURT. -4----- No. II. (BT OUR SPECIAL REPORTEe.) I visited the Exhibition agaii on Friday last, with the full determina tion of finishing the Victorian Court, but "the best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft aglee," as is well known, and so, although I purpose giving some details of what was most noticeable amongst what came under my observation, I have to confess not' only to a failure as regards keeping my promise to my readers, but I may add that so much more extensive did I find the job than I had expected to, that the time at my disposal was so fully occupied in doing a portion., of what I had pictured to myself as a comparatively trifling undertaking that the half or three-quarter-hours recreation I had promised myself in the picture gallery after theacomple tion of my task vanished like a beauti ful dream. I concluded ' sy last article by bolting into the machinery arnexe, the entrance to which I had approached just as I w'as taking' a sid...
