Motors on the Land GOOD-BYE TO THE GEE-GEE. The Trend in Queensland [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

Motors on the Land GOOD-BYE TO THE GEE-GEE. The Trend in Queensland. The motor tractor has come to stay on out-back Queensland runs. Many of the . stations in the Hughenden district arc now' using them in preference to horse teams, and although their use has not yet spread to the country where the camels carry the wool, it is only a ques tion of time and the making of the roads when the Afghan will give place to the chaufteur. iThe manager of -V large Queensland ' station, who is now on a visit to Sydney, is enthusiastic about the use of motors. P- 'I have been using one which carries three and a half tons for several months,' he said, 'and I 'find it cheaper and quicker than horses. ? And then it can do all kinds of work about the sta tion that horses cannot do. To give you an example : Last month I ran it two trips a day, covering 14.0 miles and shift ing seven tons of wool. It is 35 miles from my place to the railway. The motor went down at eight miles an hour and came back at tw...

GARDEN SUBURB FOR KEW. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

^ ? GARDEN SUBURB FOR KEW. !Mr. A. J. Farmer, of Sydney, has submitted to Kew Council (V.) an important proposition for the forma tion of a model garden suburb along the banks of the Yarra. The opposition of the reactionaries to this, as it savors of real enterprise, can, of course, be antici pated. But the council should be guided by common sense in the matter, and not be prejudiced by the cries of 'private monopoly' that are likely to arise. The uuiuiiiii-anuii ui luc uuaiguiiy auu nuiuiiuus xaiitt has always been a problem, and, before this scheme is rejected, the fullest consideration should be ac corded. Mr. Farmer has acquired the option of pur chase over 1,500 acres of river frontage, start ing at the north-east of the Kew Asylum grounds and running up the Yarra for several miles. Provided he could get the necessary permission from Kew Council to construct an electric tramway in connec tion with the property, he would subdivide the land with the object of forming a garden cit...

VICTORIAN SCHOOLS. The Government Must Wake Up. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

VICTORIAN SCHOOLS. ' The Government Must Wake Up. Arc the Victorian Education and the Public Works Departments asleep? State School committees would be pleased to find out. So great is the indifference of the departments to these committees that many members of them contemplate retiring from their posiJ tions rather than submit to the humiliation and vexa tion that the departments' inaction has brought practi cany since me creation ui me cumuuuees. Complaints keep cropping up one after another. Councillor Groves, of Dandenong Council, said re cently_that the conditions under which the children of the Chelsea State School worked were a disgrace to the Education Department. The Napier-street school committee said that their building was out of order from foundation to roof. The drainage at the High-street school, Prahran West, was long ago voted to be insanitary ; the asphalt and staircase were both in a dangerous state of disrepair. The ventilation at Hornby-street school, Windsor, w...

THE STEEL FRAME BUILDING. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

THE STEEL FRAME BUILDING. That Melbourne leads other Australian cities in steel-frame construction is proved by the number and the architectural character of those buildings already erected. Four years ago Messrs. Johns & ? Waygood anticipated the steel frame building, and made their arrangements accordingly. Their extensive modern plant, covering five acres, was built for dealing with structural steel work. They have experts employed in the various branches, and their staff numbers upwards of 400, while the works are operated throughout the day's 24 hours. It was this enterprising firm that captured the contract for Melbourne's first steel frame structure —The Centre Way. A series of buildings fol lowed, including the Methodist Book Depot, the Australian Estates and Mortgage Co. building, the National Mutual building, the Commercial Travel lers' Club, Commerce House, and the 9-storey building at present being erected in Bourke Street by Master Builder Clements Langford, to ...

THE ROADS BOARD AND VICTORIAN ENGINEERS. Questions of Policy Discussed. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 16 March 1914

THE ROADS BOARD AND VICTORIAN ENGINEERS. Questions of Policy Discussed. A very important phase of the relation of the Vic torian Country Roads Board to local Government en gineers was discussed in the Age of February 23. Secretary Gale was explaining that Frankston's engineer would not be paid £500 for certain survey work carried out under the Board's direction, and in connection with main-road construction within Frank ston shire. Evidently the reporter then got to work and gave the secretary's subsequent explanations such an flnirvratir rinrr thnr if io wr-11 f1if- tmwAr r\t flip Board under the Act be not misunderstood. Mr. Dale made it plain that the Board had fixed no de finite sum for the remuneration of engineers. He explained: 'The Board will pay according to the nature and value of the work done ? the Board has not fixed any scale of remuneration in cases of this sort, and it is not likely that it will do so, because the conditions of the work which engineers are called upo...
