A DANGEROUS RISK. [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 4 February 1888

A DANGEROUS ' RI&. Wuflfl the very air is full of the vibrations of a coining war on a scale more stupenduous and awful than has ever scathed ad' scorchied this fair earth,t t is surely folly to leave our ports open to any hostile power that maliy3 choose to honos us with a few ironclads, for the purpose of smash ing: uptiddbujning ourt city ?d'ith shot and shell. But this piece of superlttive folly the present govern inent is affected with in its most acute aiid dangerous form. The ex cuse for not politely, but firmly giving foreign powers to Iunderstand that their s wars dogsm aire nost. to be allovwed't aiile aboutiiitiur"ports ind take up positions from which they could, in a short time, briung Melbourne on its knees and extort its bullion and coin to the talme of mill lions sterling, is that to act so un granciously might lead to " complica tions.' CRICKET JOTTINGS [Newspaper Article] — The Elsternwick Leader and District Record — 4 February 1888

(RICKET JOTTINCS -o lBY " BATSMAN." On the South Melbourne ground a one dlays nitch was played betweeni thle local club and the Brighton first eleven. Though always a good jusiior club, it is only recently that the sensiders have felt themselves strong enough to be able to throw down the gauntlet to any of the senior clubs with a reasonable prospect of success. I have before to-day stated that Messrs Turner and Stokes, the well-known Ilichmondites, have cast in their lot with Blrighton, and they rhaveo -nowr received another and welcome addition to their strength in the person of G. Smith, also an oldi ichmond man, and 1 the well-known ex-Custleinainite. Add to these several promising players who have already drone yeoman service for their club and you will find the Brightonites can put a team into the field that will take sonie beating. The mastch on Saturday last was only the second they have pltyed against a senior club, as any rate without receiving a 1 haundicap, and the result...
