Milk Weed or Spurge-Wort. A SUPPOSED POISONOUS PLANT. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 29 May 1896

Milk Weed or Spurge Wort. A SUPPOSED POISONOUS PLANT. A few days ago one of our readers sent us a weed, with an inquiry as to , its nature It was an old friend, so we resolved on giving it a fair showing np this time. It's not good enough to say in ' Answers to Correspon dents ' that the weed is named ' Euphorbia Drummondii, and it is not poisonous.' Most people seem to read that part of the paper, but it's not enough. The Government Veteri nary Surgeon, Mr. Edward Stanley, F.R.O.V.S., had the same kind of queries fired at him, and he resolved on setting the thing straight for good and all, so we'll give you his experience. He had been met on every side with the statement that this milk weed was poisonous, not only from drovers, but from the alleged scientific people in Queensland and South Australia. Here is the kind of story of story that used to come to him. A patch of this milky, green weed was growing near Urana, on the stock route, and, just after rain, a drover arrived at thi...

Our Book Review. "COMEDIES OF COURTSHIP." A CHARMING BOOK. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 29 May 1896

Our Book Review. ' COMEDIES OF COURTSHIP.' A CHARMING BOOK. ' Comedies of Courtship', by Anthony Hope, author of ' The Prisoner of Zenda, etc.' London : Geo. Bell and Sons, and Bombay. 1896. Sydney : Angus and Robertson. Price, post free from this office ; in paper cover 2s 9d ; cloth 3s lOd. When a man invites me to the play, I want it to be understood that I don't want to be harrowed to ory and moan, «nd have my sympathies . aroused. Life itself is hard and co.kl ; there are tears enough and sorrows enough in real life without getting any artificial ones woven into it. When I read a book, it is for pleasure, and if the book ends unhappily, I curse the author. I like all my stories to end with the wedding bells, peace and joy. Now this book of Anthony Hope's fills the bill. It's jolly and light, free from stain, and pure as snow. It contains half-a-dozen charm ing stories, most of which — if not all — have appeared in some magazines before. There is pathos enough in some of them to...
