The annual concert ill conuectiou with the Farmers' Home Lodge, G.U.O.O.F., was held in their hall on Wednesday evening, nth inst., and was a decided success. The lia'l was well filled with an attentive and appreciative audicnce. A splendid programme was put forward, and every item rendered was well re ceived, and several encores given aud responded to heartily. The lodge is veiy much indebted to Maitland friends and otners who assisted in ine programme . and made the entertainment such a great '? success, aud the members heartily thank 1 them, one and all. To have Mr. Geo. Yeates aud party -iu a concert here is always au assurance of its success. We will not single out any particular indivi dual for praise, but simply say they all did well, and were appreciatedcior their ** efforts. The Shops at Christmastide. F. PILGRIM The well-known firm of Richardson and Scully lias passed out of existence, Mr. Pilgrim taking over the business in July last, but although the old firm has disappeared the quality of goods stocked by the new proprietor is still to be found there, only on a larger scale and of bigger variety, particularly on the drapery side. All kinds of materials for ladies' dresses are to be had, and at this time of the year the gentler sex invariably look their neatest. Mr. Pilgrim has a large range of the season's drapery to choose from, so that any one who has not already looked iu at this house would do well to seize the opportunity of securing some of their Xmas lines. Men's and boys' wear is also largely stocked, and any man or boy in need of anything from a tie to a suit can be easily fixed up. TERRIBLE*BIJRN ON PALM OF ' HAND. ' One night I struck a match and the whole box went off in my hand burning me across the palm,' says Mr. J. Woraley, Margate, Tas. 'The pain was awful, I went to the store for something to relievo me. I saw Chamberlain's Pain Balm and noticed the word ' burns ' on the label. Mules and Percherons. I In making his report lo the Min ister of Agriculture ou his recent trip to Europe and North Africa, for the purpose of purchasing ostriches for the Department, Mr. J. Herbert made some interesting and sugges tive observations, especially on the beasts of burden iu various coun tries. In Italy he was considerably struck with the fertility of the soil, and tho enormous tracts that have been farmsd for centurics under irri gation, practically all by gravitation. Incidentally it is mentioned that in Italy a general desire was found among the sturdy rural workers to emigrate to Australia. This class of Italian iy a much superior person to the average Dago with whom we are familiar.
