AN AUSTRALIAN MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT IN PORTADOWN. [Newspaper Article] — Temora Herald and Mining Journal — 8 December 1882

AN AUSTRALIAN MEUDER OF PARLIAMENT IN PORTA DOWN. On Tuesday evening the Hon. Vf. J. Watson, M.P. for Uie electoral dis trict of Young, New South Wales, addressed a large audience in the Town Hall, Portadown, on tbe subject of '* Australia, its Capabilities and Resources., and its present position in respect ot land tenure.' In the course! of his very interesting remarks, he said, that New South Wales, whioh is the parent oolouy of the Australian group, oooupled the proud position of being the only free- trade colony out there, and they found the position oooupled in this respeot had been of the greatest advantage, New South Wales being more prosperous than any of the neighbouring colonies. The Ministry was constituted similar to tbat of Great Britain, for they were not ashamed to follow the lead of the mother* country ^n this respect. (Cheers.) THE RACES. [Newspaper Article] — Temora Herald and Mining Journal — 8 December 1882

THE RACES. Much to ths rsgret of visitors to our raoes, but to the groat pica sure of our hotel keepers and busi. nest men, the Uto heavy rains have oaused the Temora Jookoy Club races to be postponod until to-day and to morrow- Ths oourse is, wo nie sorry to say, in a very sloppy state, but it is to be hoped that the dry weather sinoe yesterday, and this morning's sun will harden the running ground so as to give fair play to bot horsos and spectators. Tho tpwn is n full of well-known turhtos and vetorau bookmakorsi such as Messrs Austin, T.jDtrory, A. Watson, L. Sllberborg, R. Mostyn, and othere, and the hotels have been thronged by motaliioiana and laymon anxious to mako wagers, chiefly on the double. Lost night, a good deal ot money was laid iu certain quartors, but beyond it- very little busiuoss was done. Consider ing' all things, the town is very quiet, and shows a marked contrast to the busy times ot last year, when Rainbow took away the big prises.. There are tho usual race-...
