Obituary. IN MEMORIAM. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

fj^ IN MEMORIAM. Once more the angel of death has entered our midst, and with beckoning finger has called into the countless fold a much beloved member of the Jewish Community in the person of the late Mr. A. Sonenfild, of Cooper-street, Surry Hills. This sudden and unlooked for death has worked utter misery amongst his bereaved family. This mpst grievous incident came in upon them, crumbling cherished hopes, breaking hearts, and scatter ing our would-be pleasure into the dust and ashes of despair. What may be said to sufficiently portray the feelings of deep affection entertained for his memory by all who came in contact with him, or of the kindly gentle nature of the excel lent man, who has just passed away ?which so endeared him to both young and old? What can be said in sympathy to his bereft family that will have power to alleviate their sorrow and regret for the irreparable loss of this exemplary husband and father? But it is to be hoped that time, the greatest of all con sole...

Views on the Zionist Movement. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

Views on the Zionist Movement. Dr. Kchn, Chief Rabbi of Budi-Pesth, has given it as his opinion that political Ziunisn is dangerous. For social Zionism only, he says, there is justification, because it will secure not a State but a home, worthy of human beings, for homeless Jews such as the Jews expelled from Russia. Baron de Hirsch's attempts were made under unfavourable circumstances. The resumption of efforts to settle Jews in Palestine can do uu uarm ; on me conuary, they may in time have important results. But the colonists must be peaceul subjects of the Sultan, not founders of the State. Ta this object the rich Jews, who have been so grossly abused by Nordau, will also contribute. A p urtion of Baron de Hiisch's wealth will also fall to Palestine colonization. In England there are likewise Christains who are favourably disposed to Zionism, for there the Old Testament is still a power so that people are de sirous to see the realisation of the Bible propecies.

T!|e Pope and % Zionist Movement - The ' Italie ' sajs that after the Congress at Bisie; his Holiness held it to be his duty, as the head of Catholicism, to take all measures to avoid the recon stitution of the Jewish nation at Jerusale m. His Holiness will therefore shortly send an envoy from the - - Vatican to Constantinople, who is charged wi h an autograph letter to the Sultan, in which the Ho'y Father will, earnestly urge on the Sultan the umkrsir ability of ceding Palestine to the Jews— this on the ground that they would be able to disprove, even for a few years, the prophecy according to which they were to be for ever dispersed over the world and incapable of forming a united nation.

Mr. Leopold de Rothschild and the 'Busmen. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

Mr. Leopold de Rothschild and the 'Busmen. The London omnibus drivers and conductors, on the principal routes in the . metropolis are each receiving annually a brace of pheasants-, from Mr. Leopold de Rothschild. The gift was initiated nearly twenty- two years ago, andi has been continued every year. The recipients include the drivers and conductors ou the Bavs water, Hammersmith, Paddington, Lhelseas King's Cross, Victoria, Royal Blues, Favourites, Kennirigton, and other services of the Road Car and the London General Omnibs Com panies. Some of the old employees receive also a bottle of wine in addition to the pheasants. In recognition of Mr. Rothschild's seasonable generosity, many of the drivers display his colours on their whips. Her Majesty lost both her mother and her husband in one yeai. The intense sorrow that fell upon her is best expressed in her own words — words which convey the greatest sense of her solitude — ' I have no one to call me Victoria now.'

Chevra Keddisha. To the Editor of the "Hebrew Standard." [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 December 1897

Cljevra Keddisha. Tothft Editor of the ' Hebrew Standard.' Sir, — I always think it a mistake to indulge in personalities when discussing masters of public interest, such for instance as the above subject. The Svnaeroerue Authorities have been judged and con demned. On ex parte statements this is scarcely fair. These gentlemen, in my opinion, if that is wotth any thing, have always fulfilled their duties in an eminently successful manner, and are entitled to the best thanks of the community. Mistakes, of course, will occur' but there can be only one opinion thit the synagogue officials always acted conscientiously, and in the best interests of Judaism. Nevertheless, I am entirely in favout of the establishment of a ' Chevra Kaducha ' whose members will have the privilege of giving their loving services to the members of their faith at the sad time of sickness and death. What more noble duty can man perform to man ? than to show his active sympathy with his brother in the days of adv...
