THE MUNICIPAL ENDOWMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 14 March 1894

THE MUNICIPAL ENDOWMENT. A DEPUTATION {roin municipalities of fclio colony waited on the Premier on Friday to ask for a special subsidy of 10s in tho £ on tho rates of last year. It was explained by tho Mayors of Rockdale, Ashfield and Lambton that the municipal councils were, financially speaking, in a very bad way. Their rates had fallen off considerably owing to the depression, and unless the Government came to their aid they could not carry out necessary municipal works. In tho caBe of Lambton it was explained that after paying the council clerk and other salaries and expenses the total balaDco available for municipal work was Tho assessments varied from 20 per cent to 25 per cent loss than last year. Sir George Dibbs, in reply, said he did not think the reduction of income formed a legitimate ground for claims on the Government by municipalities for an in creased endowment. They might as well ask tile Government to take the whole burden. If the municipal taxation did not yield ...

NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 17 March 1894

NOTES AND COMMENTS. THE Brewarrina School of Arts Debating Club last week devoted, an evening to the rendering of the Bardell r. Pickwick trial, when a crowded attendance rewarded the efforts of the members and benefited the funds of the institution. The debates )f this club are a feature of the town's amusements, aud it seems carious that while Dubbo cannot master suflioiont interest ia a debating clab to keep one in existence longer than a few months, a small town like Brewarrina should have no difficulty in maintaining a flourishing one iu connection with its School of Arts. It cannot be given as a renson that Dabbo is better supplied in regard to rational amusements for evenings, ; for in that respect (the Brewarrina Debating Clnb excepted) neither town can boast an advantage. The readiug-room of the Mechanics' Institute is our only public resort of the character alluded to; and the sparse patronage accorded that institution shows that either home influences in Dubbo are strong,...

The Abor Expedition. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 17 March 1894

The Abor Expedition. Tueiu: is a very eonsiderablediffercnce between a punitive expedition in the South Seas and the same kind of undertaking on (lie Assam frontier. British interests are occasionally trampled upon among the Coral Islands by a native who steals a white man's pig, or something of the sort. That is generally the way it begins. The while man doesn't, just sifc there and do nothing, yon may depend, and after a. while the thing develops into a serious row, eventuating in arson or tragedy. Then one of the Empire's floating fortresses come round the palm-fringed headlacd and demands the body of the miscreant who stole the pig, which, considerably nourished by (he plunder, lias removed itself long ago to some ot.her island. Thn punitive example is carried out all (ho same, though, b<*cau8e tho whole people, head oil by their chief, strike for the interior instead of for limine and country. Thatchcd palaces burn beantifnlly, and ripe melons, fresh from the stalk a...
