Thornton Annual Sports. The annual sports meeting of the Thornton Athletic Club was held on the grounds adjoining the Rubicon Hotel on Wednesday, 3rd February. The weather was splendid, but the sun was a trifle hot. The committee had an excellent programme of events arranged, for which a large number of entries were received, and the large assemblage of spectators present wit. nessed some very close finishes, es peciallyr in the Shire and Sheffield Handicaps. ' he committee carried out their duties in a creditable man 'er, and kept well up to time with each event. The list of results are given below. Mrs Baker,; of the Rubicon Hotel, had the publican's " booth, and did a thriving busiutess, whilst Mrs T. Taylor was kept busily engaged with the refreshment booth. Wheeler and M'Pherson, J's.P., a couple of debt cases were heard The comptainants were two leading storekeepers in Alexandra and Yarck, whilst Mrs Graham, of Spring Creek, was the defendant in both cases, but did not put in an appearance. Bowling, -4t-- YEA V. ALEXANDRA. ALEXANDRA WINS THE PENNANT. The fourth contest in connection with the pennant matches between members of above clubs was held on the local green, on Wednesday last. The rinks were in excellent going order thanks, to the energies of Caretaker G. Morris. The visitors were without three of their best, but, nevertheless a very exciting game re sulted, No 1 and 3 rinks scoring very close throughout. The players on No. 2 rink showed a remarkable reversal of form, as while the visitors scored 8 points to the local's 0, they suddenly fell away. At the sixth end the locals opened with 5 points, and had the pleasure of turning the tables by running their score up to 15, Yea not putting on a single point for 6 ends, a complete reversal.
