The Morning Bulletin, ROCKHAMPTON. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 7 February 1878

ROCKHAMPTON. OUR cable messagls t3£t indicate tliat the progress of peace negotiations is not altogether unsatisfactory. Thew is some ambiguity about {he news.^jiii^pHHT" message of Sunc iy's dajafstating that the armistice li: s bo/n signed, while Reutet's message ofÄhesame date says the "protocol oily* hAbeen signed.J The latter adds, 1 iwever, that hostilities" have been suspei oed, and the former that the blockadi of nfie Black Sea has been raised. Thc presumption is, there- fore, that the anni ¡tice is «ally in force, and that blood-spi ling for a wraejtjcasj, has ceased. The desttuction of human life during the past nine months has been indeed i ightful, the Russians admitting to a 1< ¡s of nearly 90,000 men. Taking the oss on the other side as equal, we have ¡ sacrifice of 180,000 bread-winning adi Its because diploma- tists could not a ;rce, or because of ungovernable amt tion on one side or crass obstinacy on he other. Whatever taunts may be indulged in as to the...

KIDNAPPED BY INDIANS. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 7 February 1878

KIDNAPPED BY INDIANS.       The Springfield Republican says:- "The late unfortunate encounter of tourists in the Yellowstone National Park with the Nez Perces proves to have been of the most thrilling description. The party consisted of Mrs. Oldham, Mr.Cowan, Frank Carpenter   and his two sisters, Mrs. Cowan, and Ida Carpenter. They suddenly found the country swarming with Indians and voluntarily sought Chief Joseph to ask protection. Before this   chief's camp was reached, however, some   vagrant Indians robbed them, and brutally   killed Oldham and Cowan. Carpenter was on   the point of being killed when he made the   sign of the cross, and this would-be murderer,   with a sudden memory of his Catholic teach- ing, staid his hand and took the man and Mrs. Cowan under his protection, hiding them from   the rest of the Indians. Meantime, a you...

The Morning Bulletin, ROCKHAMPTON. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 8 February 1878

ROCKHAMPTON. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1878. THE despatches reoeived by Sir George Bowen appear to have been placed to the credit of the B ny party. And there is no doubt but tin t they do not support the high-handed :ourse taken by thc Council. It must be recollected, how- ever, that the d< spatches cannot be dated later than th 21st December, and that all the facts co aid not possibly have been before Lord Carnarvon when he wrote. The Co iservative party in Victoria will be bill lily disappointed at the Imperial approvbl being given to the inclusion of thc Payment of Members ¡tem in the Appropriation Bill. But as the facts were placed Before her Majesty's Crown Law ofticels-for no doubt the Secretary of State wrote under their advice-we should liave been surprised had the decision! been otherwise. It must be tecoilected that payment of members lad been authorised by statute, had beet practised for six years, and liad never jeen abolished by legislation. It was irue that the A...
