SCHOOL OF MINES. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 24 October 1888

SCHOOL OF MINES. TO THE EDITOR. * SIB,-I am very glad to find that Mr Crosby is now advocating a School of Mines for this diatriot. Bat after con tinuaUy advocating it ever since I came here, I think it a little rough that Mr Qrosoy should gravely doubt whether any thing has been done before July last. On 4tho£ June, 1886, two years ago, I read a paper before our Literary Society advo cating such a school and claiming that this was the proper place for it. That paper afterwards appeared in Wallaroo Times ol JtKie 23,1886. I have tried at various times" to interest our people in it, but hitherto with but little success. I am glad, however, now to hear that an effort is being made to memorialise the Govern ment on the question by the directors of our local Institutes. I should, however, mu&IV prefer a public meeting. May I venture to hope that our public spirited Mayor will call one, and that Mr Grosbv ,mit be. theiftta assist. -I am, &c., A. HOLLOWAY.

ORIGINAL POETRY. YTHAN SIDE. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 27 October 1888

ORIGINAL POETRY. YTHAK SIDE. O, Ythan, bonny are thy braes; By thee I spent my youthful days, And gathered brambles, hips, and sloes, On ythan side. Upon thy banks the flowerets sprang, And in thy brakes the birdies song. And trom'the branehesberriea hong,, On Tthan side. The wild gokts olamb'ring up the Tocks, Surrounded by majestic oaks, Far from the reach of woodman's strokes, , On'Tthan side. GichtCastle stands a ruin now. The ivy clustering round its brow, Where rooks, and jack-daws raise a row, On Tthan side. Crag-horror, too, stands firm and fast, Expo Bed to many a boisterous blast; And there for ases it may last. On Tthan side. I've trod thy meadows soft end green, Where lads and lasses might be seen. Breathing sweet amoronB words, I ween, On Tthan side. While music filled the balmy air, And, oh i it mak's my heart richt eair, To think I'll never wander mair "On Tthan Bide. The angler, with his rod in hand, Upon thy bank, I see him stand, The salmon deftly brings to land, ....

3Safritta M ftMaraa ?imts KADINA, SATURDAY. OCTOBER 27. 1888. THE NEW I.AMD BILL. Thi?BE is miich speculation at present as to the fateof the Kew Land Bill. That ther^is much need for a measure which will accomplish the object sought to be ati|paed by Part II, there are no two oj^ipns. ' Because in many of the dry hundreds a large number hare got hopelessly in arrear, and it i8 hard that they sbouldrbe asked to sacrifice the laboriifyears by allowing the Government to .forfeit their holdings. Those who have rio desire to purchase the land may, nnder the existing law, surrender ^e^agreement' for a lease, all arrears being forgiven. EaP there are many frho not having become em bued witfi the Land Nationalists' doc trines desire^to^avail themselyes of a means of jfrliich, - while it frees th«m from their present difficulties will still admit of th eir eventuallyobtaining the fee simple of their land.
