BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. January 30. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 14 February 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIBB. fBOH OUR SPECIAL OOBBESPONDEHT. January 80. IT has been blowing here literally a hurri cane. Ton will perceive that I use the impersonal pronoun. We have been subdued enough. But the weather lias been abomin able, the streets have been swept by clouds of dust, and the Bilvery (?) Brisbane has been a raging ooean, frightening the life out of timid old ladies of both sexes by sending buckets of water into the feny boats. You will have seen all about the big sums that have been collected for the Irish Famine Belief Fond. It is really creditable to the colony. Only it is rather a good thing that the money came in before the telegram about Pamell's declaration in America was pub lished. Since then there has been an impres sion got abroad that the whole thing was somewhat of a sell, and that there isn't any famine in Ireland. For my own part I scarcely hope that this view of the matter is correct. I don't want any proof that people have been or are dying in Ireland of co...

TO TBS EDITOR, firn,-With reference to n paragraph in your paper of the 31st January, wherein you say " That then; has been a Police Magistrate at Ikisford during the last eight months, yet we doubt if be has ever known the boundaries of his district, or what imaginary line divides it from the Blackall district, icc., &c.," I beg to inform you that as for back as the 1st or 2nd July last, being the first opportunity I had, being then in Blackall, I inquired of Mr. Sub-Inspector Aliern, in the presence of Mr. Bell, of Avingion (who wished to know which district he was in), whether be (Mr. Altera) could inform me if any dividing line had been defined between bis and the Black nil district. Blr. Ahcrn's reply WOP, "That lis didn't know (lie boundary, and did not think anybody else did cither." I again asked him ou the 19th or 20th of August whether any boundary line had been decided on. To Correspondents. "Locus STANDI."-1. Is n start crjnetificd in starting horses in front of the storting post?-No. Sec rule 67 Q.T.C 2. When a committee ndrcrtises to run under certain rules, should they do so?-Yes. 8. Are the committee responsible for the actions of their oQicers ?-Ko. Officers arc personally respon sible for any illegal actions or errors they may commit. THE committee of the Barcoo Racing Clnb have issued tiieir eighth annual programme, and in glancing over tlic bill of fare, we find that the weight forage race has been reduced to linlf a century, or fifty pounds less than last year. Why this has been done we arc unable to comprehend, for no better race could be -witnessed than the wcight-f or-agc at last July meeting, won by Coronation against Vanguard and others. However, the committee know their own business best, and in introducing a handicap'for 100 SOYS, on the some day will, no doubt, bring grist to the mill in the way of nominations. The Maiden 1'latc of 4...
