PEOPLING VICTORIA. Closer Settlement Troubles [Newspaper Article] — Stawell News and Pleasant Creek Chronicle — 19 February 1914

PEOPLING VICTORIA. Closer Settlement Troubles The question of oloeer settlement has during the last few days excited the profoundest interest not only in Parliament bat throughout Victoria. The damning report of tho Com mittee appointed to inquire into the policy of the Closer Settlement Board has convinced ail, (hut there is dras tic need for change. In any case the I interests at stake are very large, the j Closer Settlement Board has spent on th>) average £500,000 per annum on the purchase of land and also I advances an average of £'200,000 a j year to- settlers. Thus the Board controls a business which tax-'s the eleotors to the extent of /700,000 a year. The curious feature of (he business iathat the present Chairman of the Board declared frankly that he was not master of the position, and added the startling remark, "An apple cart down the street could be run on the lines on which Victoria's closer Battlement scheme was con ducted". To this statement Mr McKenzie*, former Mi...

Borough Matters (TO THE EDITOR OF THE "STAWELL NEWS") [Newspaper Article] — Stawell News and Pleasant Creek Chronicle — 19 February 1914

Borough Matters (to Thi emion or The "Siiwill news") Sir,—Perch »ns\ or possibly but not probably, the indignation recent ly expressed l>y the "critic" who vainly hopes for a inauicipal Millenium in Stawell, may btivc penetrated that grey matter which is supposed to constitute tha differ ence between the brainy man and the "other follow." Unfortunately, fur provincial towns theM are too many of the other tellowa Btill loose, and too many brainy men who havo reti ed in disgust. Not necessarily to lunatic asylums. Tho "in dignant ori ic" enumerates various secr't items amounting to only 11.91G of the rat-payers money but be can accept my assuranoe. after uot quite half a century of experience of municipal nutters tbat there has bepn more municipal waste—"orgies of extravagance" in Stawell during the paBt decade than during the whole history of municipal lifo.
