An Ass-ty Dream. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 6 March 1869

An Ass-ty Dream. A nasty donkey and a mule Upon a common ran. 'lwas sometime donkey, sometime: mule,. .;,., And sorctimelike a man. ., , This brute once trudged up iroiintain roads With spuds upon his baic, lhen J.mnieson was in its prime, lBefore the Yarra Track. No traininrt hlrd this critter got, Nor dlokced his mane nor tail.. , . A horri.l mouth and lazy gait, Ils paces like a snail. And vicionusly hekicked behi:id Against the comn.non her, ' And hit and snorte I all tho.day. I)isgustingly absurl . le scorned to pay the common due,, But loafed upon the grass, And brayed against the shepherds live Like a stubborn, stupid ass At last a-pad lock green he spied, Where rbl the speolal herd, . And swore he'd burst his blegsed hide, , Or get into the Board. 'Twas like a bunch of carrots red Held out before his pate. The stubborn donkey quickly sped, And paid the obnoxious rite. But " O.nny " a well-trained, wall eyed nag,. Sure-footed, honest horse, Not fon.l of chaff, got lots of (v)...

On Monday evening all the inhabitants of Yea and surrounding localites who are liable to be rated, are expected to attend at the public meeting, to be hold at Oliver's Com mercial Hotel, fbr the purpose of taking some steps towards making arrangements for securing the best possible representation in the Yea Road Board, which is about to be formed. Judging from the interest that the people of Yea take in most public matters, we fully expect that there will be a numerous attendance. The business of the meeting, we presume, is to nominate suitable candi dates for the Board, and as there are already, over a dozen in the field, there will be plenty of material to choose from. (The following appeared in an extraordi nary on Wednesday last.J THE WOODEN DONKEY. The people of Troy thought they had secured a great prize when they carrtied within their walls the monster wooden `horse left behind by_ the repulsed besieger, and great was the rejoicing of the Tro.jans. uilt they paid dearly for and regretted bitterly that little mistake. May not the people of Alexandra commit a somewhat si:n.ilhr error? George Whiting, who has from the first sit ting of our august Board. plte?l filth at its members, ridiculed its measures, and raised a moneyed combination against the rate, now stands before the walls in all the sim plicity of a great wooden donkeiy..:and asks the ratepayersd to -take him in. Depend upon it if you do, he will prove a wooden donkey as terrible' in its effects ss the great horse of the Trojans. When you find George Whiting leagued with Perkins and Coster,.tlhe late objects of his special hate, and on whom he poured his hitterest abuse, be not deceiv...

Correspondence. To the Editor of the Alexandra Times. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 6 March 1869

To the Editor of the Alexandra "Timea: Sin-I have to request permission to correct some statements condemnatory of the Minister of Justice, which appeared in your last isssue, in a letter signed " Pub licus." When the Minister yisited Mans field in October last, he did not make many promises, but we must do him the justice to say that what he did promise he promptly fulfilled. The names of four gentlemen (not two) were proposed fobr the Commission of the Peace. They were immediately placed before His Excellency in Council, approved of, and, after certain necessary formalities, will in due course appear in the Gazette. *' Publicus" is in error in stating that a sup. plementary roll of Magistrates has been published since the visit of the Minister of Justice; some alterations have been made in the old roll,. but. the supplement has yet to appear; and when it does, he will find- that as far as the appointment of Magistrates is concerned, ample provision has been made for the administra...
