CONCERNING THE KING. [Newspaper Article] — Barrier Daily Truth — 12 November 1908

CONCERNING THE KING. Yesterday unofficial Broken Hill celebrated, or pretended to celebrate, the birthday of King Edward. 'With equal earnestness that part of the community that takes its time from Sydney did its celebrating on Monday. There was more pretence-than patriotism on both days. .We ail wish health and happi ness to the King;i and though it may ' be . disloyal, we say that his : birthday ' is more an ..excuse ;fpr. a ;: holiday than an ; occasion, for ? prayer, just as anticipation of enjoyment of a glass of good.b.eer is rather, more emphatic in the mind of the aver age man than. any consideration of high reverence. If His Majes ty's toast had to be drunk in wormwood tea or with a dash of assafoctida, w.e fear that :inany excellent Tories (from the ranks of peers of the. realm to that cur iosity in shams, the ' ' Conservative working man') would leave the King's health undrunk; ?' ; . ; AY.e pretend to honor hini-on his natal day, as we pretend to send petitions to heaven...
