Igriciiltigral Items. ANNUALS FOR WINTER FLOWERING. There are some annuals that are used forwinterfloweringand answer admirably for the bouquet maker. Of these, of course the Mignonette stands prominent. Not for its showy, but fragrant character. A very good way is to take boxes the width of the front table, usually three feet or so—and say one foot wide by nine inches deep. These should be provided with holes in the bottom for drainage, partially filled with coarse material for the. same purpose, then the balance filled to within an inch or two of the top with -food ordinary soil. Sow the seed ihinly; the end of this month is a o-ood time for the first batch. Keep partially shaded and moist until the plants arc well up, then thin out the voung plants to three inches asunder. Keep'tlicm out of tlu /Teen-house as long as possible and when put in, cec that thev are pretty close to the ' "-lass. ° They may also be grown nicely in foiir-iuch pots—allowing not over three manv do not ...

October.—Somber yet happy Autumn is here; the landscape wears the sere and yellow hues, blended with red and green, the more bril- j liant for tlie contrast. But for the j sighing winds and the chill that is in i the air. and the drifts of leaves that are swept across the view, one might j take October for the gayest month of! the twelve. And. it is gay. Why I should the falling of the leaf inspire ! sad thoughts? All things grow old I as do garments, and like them they ' are changed with the season, or in • their appointed time. If we change ; with them it should be as the biuis • mature on tlie trees, to burstinto lent j in the spring, or as the fruits and i seeds ripen for the Master's use. or j as the bulbs wrap up the vital germ j which will rise into a nciv and beau- : tifiil life when the spring time comes. ; This is the season of abundance, ' when men and beast prepare for the j coming winter. The days are grow-1 ing shorter, and long evenings invite ¦ to reading, study,...

vYokk in the Hoisticui.tukai. Departments.—The leaves have done their work ! All summer long they have taken the sunlight and given off nothing but green, but now that their work is accomplished, they and the sun are having a gala lime of it. and they throw his light back in crimson and gold The fruit, too. which has heretofore been green, now splashes itself with carmine, and j turns its ruddy cheek to the sun. i The Great Artist puts the last touches j \t.o the fruit in the beautiful waxen ; 'bloom that betokens perfection. The! harvest of tlie orchard and the great j harvest ofthe forest are this month, gathered. Tiie ripe leaves lighten the scene with their transient glow, and dutifully fall to the earth to give up what they received. Did you ever look at the place from which a leaf has fallen ? eTust there is a bud all ready for next spring's work. Is not there a lesson here, when even an inanimate leaf, as we are accustomed to ["call it, thus early makes provision for anot...
