GENERAL NEWS " _Whaiemen at the Sandwich Islands The Honolulu Polynesian of December 15th says that the season just dosed was the poorest shipping season on record for maDy years in the Hawaiian ports. The various reasons advanced for this untoward condition are these: Sixty-five whaleships less have visited the islands this year than the last; the average catch has been less; a greater number of ships than l ast year have been homeward bound; and more trading has been done between the shipping in port than formerly. Inasmuch as the next year's whaling fleet will be still less than the last, the Polynesian _^ conolades that the business done with whaleships at the islands has _aeen its palmiest days, and advises the merchants to seek other channels of- investment at once. While the whaling business itself has diminished, San Franoisco has become a powerful rival to the Hawaiian ports, as a rendezvous for whalers. Precious Metai.
