BOOK REVIEW [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

BOOK REVIEW THE CAMPAIGN OF TRENTON , 1776-77 . By Samuel Adams Drake . Price in cloth 50 Cents . Boston : Lee and Shepard . Chicago : A . C . McClurg & Co . THIS neat little book belongs to a series on the Decisive Events in American History . It contains valuable diagrams and maps showing the military positions . It deals with the military operations beginning at New York , August , 1776 , and ending at Morristown , January , 1777 , often regarded as the critical period of the Revolution . Colonel Drake says : The military , political , and moral effects of the brilliant finish to what had been a losing campaign , in which almost each succeeding day ushered in some new misfortune , were prodigious . But neither the Importance nor the urgency of this masterly counter-stroke , to the American cause , can be at all appreciated , or even properly understood , unless what had gone before is fulLr brought to light . With the aid ofTiitherto unused materials the author has co...

Farm / Garden arid Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 5 March 1896

Farm / Garden arid Orchard DO OATS , IMPOVERISH THE SOIL MORE THAN WHEAT ? PEOPLE here contend that oats draw or impoverish land a great deal more than wheat . They say that crabgrass and weeds will not grow on land where oats have been removed , or not so fine growth as where wheat has grown . They argue that both crops may be seeded at the same time . Is it so , and if so why ? Some information will be gladly received . —J . W . F ., Durham , N . C . This question was sent to the North Carolina Experiment Station and received the following reply by F . Er Emery , Agriculturist of that Station : The difference between what wheat and oats take out of the land can be shown after we settle what should be considered a fair crop of each . Suppose twenty bushels of wheat and forty bushels bats . are an average crop . Which draws but most plant food from the soil ? The station wheat experiments in 1891 yielded an average of 217 pounds of straw to 100 of grain . In 1888 experiments with oa...

NEWS COMMENTS [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 5 March 1896

NEWS COMMENTS The Prohibitionists of Iowa are greatly disappointed . They have been working three years for a resubmission to the people of the prohibitory amendment . . It had passed one legislature but it must pass two general assemblies before it can be- submitted to the people . . It was defeated February 27 by a vote of 52 to 41 in the House . News \ comes from Mexico that the rebellion in Nicaragua is fomented by the clerical and moneyed classes who wish to overthrow the liberal governments in Central America , which are friendly to the United . States . They wish to prevent an American protectorate and the growing power of the United States . Priests are stirring up the excitement . Venezuela holds out against all of the British demands . The time limit the English government had set for the payment of the indemnity demanded of Venezuela for the arrest of the British police inspector expired a few days ago and Venezuela ^ had made no move . The question is whether England is ...

Herdsv Flocks ; and Dairy [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 5 March 1896

Herdsv Flocks ; and Dairy t ) ARE OF YOUNG HEIFERS . If you keep the young heifers off in one corner of the stable , and feed and care for them after all the other animals have been attended to , and that , in an indifferent manner , they are likely to prove poor property when they become milkers . It Js a popular fallacy that young stock require only second-class feed and care , but heifers ought to be treated on equal terms with milch cows . All the future usefulness of a milk animal may depend on how * he fares before her first pregnancy . True , she does not need a milk-forming . diet , but she requires a tissue and boneforming one , for a future reserve force when she becomes a cow . The amount of flesh on a youag animal s back does not necessarily represent physical forceV vitality , or sound tissue . It may be merely fat , without a relative development of sinew , bone and muscle . A heifer will . stand more exercise than a cow , but she wants just as warm a stable , and shou...
