THE PROFITABLE TYPE [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

THE PROFITABLE TYPE J . W . HIBBARD , Bennisgton , Mich ( See Editorial on Page 14 . ) We notice in the June issue of The Berkshire World a long article on the above subject from our friend , W . E . Spicer , and in it we notice that he has taken great pains to level his 22 , as he has termed it , directly at me , or in other words , he has practically thrown a dare at me . Now , I was told , when a boy , that anyone that would take a dare would take a sheep , and so far through life I have attempted not to take either , and while I do not claim any fame or notoriety as a newspaper writer , I have a reputation as a judge and as a breeder that I feel it my duty to defend , and while I may not be able to make all things clear in this note of reply , yet I am here to stay with my friend and I am in no way afraid of th ? . t long barreled 22 he has in his opinion so well loaded . First , he has attempted to give what he may call some outstanding records of weights made by himself and ot...

The Value of a Great Herd Boar . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

The Value of a Great Herd Boar . Everson Bros ., Wellington , Ohio , have always recognized the value of a great herd boar . At present they are using Premier Masterpiece 3 d , a son of Lord Lee and Handsome Duchess 3 d , one of the noted litter by Masterpiece that first brought attention to that great boar . Handsome Duchess 3 d is a litter mate to the dam of Handsome Lee and as both of these boars are sired by Lord Lee , they are bred in identical lines and are breeding very much alike . We have seen a large number of the under year sows that are being fitted for the fall fairs and no one breeder has three better ones than the three owned by Everson Bros . By September 1 st , these September and October sows will weigh 400 pounds each and strange as some breeders may think , they have ideal heads , that would delight such a lover of good heads as Mr . J . W . Hibbard . Good heads , however , is not all that they have as they have well sprung ribs , heavy hams , great length , extr...

Must Sell Balance of Herd at Once . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

Must Sell Balance of Herd at Once . Toledo , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , III . Gentlemen : —In regard to the bunch of pigs -which I am advertising for sale in another place in . this paper , beg to say , that I think if some of the readers of The Berkshire World could come and look at them and see the spring pigs we raised and sold to the neighbors from this herd , we would not own them very long , as I never saw better spring pigs . The reason I am selling balance of my small herd of Berkshires is on account of the selling of the farm and its beeing platted and sold in 30 days for city lots , and just now my business will not permit me to do any farming , but it will not be long , I hope , before I shall have a much larger herd of Berkshires for they are the hog for us . We sold to a butcher this winter three seven months old pigs for $ 97 . The boar Queen s Premier 113528 is a very fine individual . I purchased this young pig from the Vanderbilt herd at Biltmore , N...

Local Trade Good [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

Local Trade Good Willoughby , O . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —Having been confined to the house for the past two days , I have spent more time than usual looking over the June issue of your paper and it is a pleasure indeed to note the remarkable progress you have made in giving the Berkshire breeders of this country a thoroughly up-to-date journal as well as a live advertising medium . Your efforts in this line should be appreciated by every man who owns a Berkshire as well as every man who desires to own a profitable hog . Local trade has been exceptionally good with us the past few months and many new friends have been made for the Berkshire in northern Ohio . We are offering ten choice gilts bred to either Rival s Lord Premier 2 d , or Willoughby Masterpiece , both of which are proving their value as breeders in , our herd by their large , strong , well marked litters with good short heads and good bodies . Several of these gilts are sired by Rival s L...

I Prefer Quality to Quantity . Safe , Mo . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —I will give you a few facts in regard to my Berkshires . I bought my first Berkshire sow in 1900 . I have purchased many since . I have shipped to all adjoining states and several others in the East , South and West . I do not keep a great many hogs , I prefer quality to quantity . Gentry of Sedalia , Mo . ) Master Premier 3 d 122519 is also used as a herd boar . He was sired by Masterpiece . I have some nice young boars and sows to offer , such as I have been shipping for the laat ten years . They have made me many good customers , but I can take care of a few more . Will answer all inquiries promptly and would be pleased to hear from those that are interested . Respectfully , M . W . MagMissoq .

SHOW PICS BY INVINCIBLE MASTERPIECE BARGAINS AT $ 50 I have some great prospects for the under six months show class sired by Invincible Masterpiece , the Grand Champion son of Masterpiece at Illinois State Fair in 1909 . These gilts are right and I consider them bargains at $ 50 each . Last month I advertised a son of BciTVtOn DllkC Jr . j and received numerous replies to that ad . The boar was sold to Mr . S . J . Craig , Elwood , Illinois , and he certainly secured a bargain . I have on hand at all times good Berkshires that I try to feed right , develop right , and certainly will price them right . Purchased Something Good From Arthur Place . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

Purchased Something Good From Arthur Place . • Fremont , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —We saw in the World G . W . Bowsher and Sons special offer for June , consisting of two young herds of Berkshires . We visited Arthur Place and secured first choice herd , consisting of a boar by Royal Duke 73 d and gilts by Starlight Premier E . The quality was finer than we expected to see . They are well hammed , have long bodies , the best of bone , and up on their toes witn fine markings . We have gilts that are Longfellow and Masterpiece breeding that we intend to breed to the Royal Duke 73 d boar and expect good results . We expect to exhibit our herd against some of the best herds in the state . Also have been breeding Duroa Jerseys for 10 years and have exhibited at Ohio State Fair several times . The Seaconnet Farm [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

The Seaconnet Farm Little Compton , R . I . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —A year ago the Berkshire was unknown , in this section . At that time the sow Longfellows Gem 6 th 88435 came to Seaconnet Farm . This grand old hog is one of the few living daughters of Longfellow and her great scale and bone , her cleverness and the character of her spring litter attracted immediate attention . Since then the progress of the breed has been rapid . We have been able to place every desirable boar pig we have had on near-by farms , and there has been on approach to meeting tue call for stock of the other sex . It seems to be a question of only a short time when the Berkshire will have crowded out the white scrub , this because no one can question which makes the most of the same amount of feed or dresses off the best . We believe that the Seaconnet farm herd now ranks with any in the east . The herd boars are Seaconnet Masterpiece a son of Masterpiece 77000 , out of a d...

The litter sired by Star Value was farrowed May 23 , 1910 , 6 boars and 1 sow . I intend to reserve the BOW for my own herd , but will offer the boars at reasonable prices . They are all good and the two tops boars will certainly make note . Somehow I have an inclination to reserve one of them for by own herd . Their dam is Lady Combination 22 d , one of the herd that won first as produce of sow at the Ohio and Indiana State Fairs 1909 , is a daughter of Young Premier Chief and out of Lady Combination 13 th who is a daughter of Young Baron Duke and Lady Combination 5 th . This certainly is royal breeding and what may be expected ? The boar pig by Livingston Masterpiece is a very good individual with good head , great length and depth of body and should go to some good herd . Eastern breeders who want a pig sired by a...

Selling Berkshires by Mail [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910

Selling Berkshires by Mail It is easy to have no dissatisfied customers when they have been right on the ground and have bought after careful personal inspection and choice ; but it requires more hog and better pedigree to get universally good reports from hogs sold all over the Union on mail orders without knowing the peculiarities of the buyer . Every month we receive letters as follows from some of the most remote parts of the U . S . Arrived in Fine Condition . St . Michaels , Md . Mr . Eugene T . Lippincott , Lima , Ohio . Dear Sir : —The Berkshire gilt arrived by Adams Express in fine condition , will look for transfer paper and pedigree in a few weeks . Respectfully yours , Jno . W . Martin . A Square Deal .
