A few politicians and a few journals are making a doleful bowl just now about the lection of a Senator this winter by our Leg islature, which they imagine all sorts of unfair games to be practiced uj.on their im maculate political God, Jim Lane he is to be superseded and forced to give up his seat a year too soon by Governor Carney. We do not believe any attempt will or ought to be made to elect a Senator this winter. The Legislature can just as well elect Pome roy'a successor as Lane's, and, in fact, if they go into tie election of aenator at all, they might as well elect a supply for twenty five years, so that there will be no more contention on this subject. We think the scared individuals above alluded to can calm their fears. In common with a considerable portion of the loyal people of the country, we have sometimes indulged a spirit of grumbling at what we regarded the tardiness of the Administration;...

EMPORIA, KANSAS. SATURDAY, JANUARY 30, 1864. LATEST WAR NEWS. There is no news of inipoitance in'our latest exchanges. There baa been some skirmishing in various portions of the South, but no fighting of any moment. A dispatch eays a staff officer from Knox- rille brings information that Longstreet, re inforced by 20,000 men, was advancing on Knoxville, driving Gen. Granger's force be fore him. It was thought oar army would be compelled to fall back to the entrench ments of Knoxville. It was reported that John Morgan, with 5,000 'cavalry wa3 preparing to make a movement to cut off communication below Knoxville and Chattanooga, or to make a Taid in Kentucky. It is positively stated that the Govern ment is in receipt of additional information of another contemplated attack by rebels in Canada, on Johnson's Island.
