St. Patrick’s Dream. [Newspaper Article] — Pilot — 15 March 1873

St. Patrick’s Dream. by THOMAS D’ARCT MAGEE. Poor is the pallet he dreams upon, In the holy city, St. Martin’s of Tours; Is it a beam of the morning sun Hushes that face so pale and pure? Is it the ray of a cloister lamp? Is it some chalice jewel bright? No! night and the cell are dim and damp— Here is nor earthly nor astral light! Oh, such a dream! From Foclut wood, Near the souuding sea ol an earlier day, Ten thousand voices, well understood, Spoke! and the sleeper heard them say: Hear the Unborn! by the band Oi the angel Victor—swift is he! Oh, Patrick, far in thy Christian land, Ex-in’s unborn we send to thee! ” And then he dreamt that St. Victor stood By liia pallet in that cell at Tours— And the cries were hushed in Foclut wood; But the heavenly messenger, swiit and sure, Presente the scroll that bore tlieir prayer, In the speech of his exile fairly writ— And waking, the Saint beheld it there— And these were the words he read from it : “ Come! holy one, long preordain’d, F'or ...

The Fall of the Savoyard. Abdication of Don Amadeo. [Newspaper Article] — Pilot — 15 March 1873

The Fall of the Savoyard. Abdication of Don Amadeo. From Our Special Roman Correspondent. Rome , Feb. 12, 1873. The King of Spain has abdicated. Such is the news tbe telegraph brings us. How long has not this been expected, how frequently predicted! One needed not to have any pretensions to the" gift of prophecy to declare that the Savoyard Prince could not long remain" King of Spain; he was too great a burden to the high-minded people of Spain. East year, when he returned from the tour which he made through the country, and of which so many false reports of welcome were sent to America and to England, a republican of Madrid thus spoke of him in public: 4 4 The moment has come to clear tlie political atmosphere of the putrid miasma which arises from the corpse buried in the Pantheon of the Plaza del Orientc.” The 44 corpse” was Dou Amadeo, the “Pantheon” the Royal Palace. And the Spaniard who thus spoke only gave voice to the sentiments of many thousands. Tlie moment, however, has c...

Our Irish Letter. The Trial of the Galway Priests. AC QUITTAL OF THE BISHOP. [Newspaper Article] — Pilot — 15 March 1873

Our Irish Letter. The Trial of the Galway Priests. AC QUITTAL OF THE BISHOP. Cork. Feb. 14, 1873. The Galway Prosecutions Are in full swing. 3lr. Attorney-General Palles has got over any little qualms of conscience lie mi slit have, had as a respectable ‘ ‘ Cawtholic,” and has gone in with quite heroic ardor for the prosecution of high dignitaries of the Catholic Church. Uy> to the present those prosecutions have been a ludicrous failure: only succeeding in giving new life to the public abhorrence of Judge Keogh, and rallying the sympathies of the whole people around those he has persecuted. As I write, onlv one case has been decided of the th e that remain for trial; but there can be no reasonable doubt that this one case will rule the rest, and, if it does, the famous Galway prosecutions will he a sublime farce, with lier Majesty's Government playing the part of clown. There was a mighty bustle of expectation about these trials among all manner o'f antiCafholics, it is ...

Our Canada Letter. [Newspaper Article] — Pilot — 15 March 1873

Our Canada Letter. Ottawa, Feb. 28, 1873. Interesting Statistics. The first volume of the Canadian census report has lately been issued, and the religious statistics gleaned thereirom will prove interesting to Catholics. These are for the year 1871. The following is the numerical strength of the different denominations: The Catholics numbered 1,192,629; of the rest, there were 567,091 Methodists, principally Wesleyan, *44,928 Presbyterians, 494,049 belonging to the Church of England, 239,343 Baptists, 7345 Quakers, 4870 Universalists, 2275 Unitarians, 1115 Jews, 1886 Pagans, and some others that number by tens aud hundreds merely. Quebec is the greatest Catholic province, and Ontario the greatest Protestant. In the former there were 746,866 Catholics to a population of 890,261 in the year 1851; 942,724 to a total of 1,110,664 in the year 1861, and 1,019,850 out of 1.191,516 in 1871. When it'is considered that there is no French immigration at present, but rather that French Canadian...

The New Senate. [Newspaper Article] — Pilot — 15 March 1873

The New Senate. As the XLJJd Congress passes out of existence, the new Senate of the XLIIId will meet in extra session. We wish it a more useful career than that of its predecessor. The peculiar temptations of a “ Presidential year” will be removed. and the Senate may forget the narrow partisanship which nas recently distinguished it. Taught by the present popular revolt against dishonesty and deceit, and invigorated perhaps by the presence of a number of new members, fresh from contact with their constituents, it may lend itself more zealously to useful works. We cannot say, however, that its composition offers at first glance an excuse for general congratulation. It loses, to be sure, very little that was worth keeping. Lyman Trumbull will be severely missed; but, if we except Francis P. Blair, none of the other retiring members are men of national fame; and two or three who disgrace their places will withdraw to-day into a privacy which we trust will|long remain undisturbed. But,...

FR, BURKE'S GREAT SERMON —ONSAINT PATRICK. [Newspaper Article] — Pilot — 15 March 1873

FR, BURKE'S GREAT SERMON —ON—SAINT PATRICK. We present our readers to-day with the finest oration on Ireland’s Patron Saint that has, perhaps, ever been delivered . He who spoke the burning words is no longer with us; but as we read the noble passage of his eloquence, and as our hearts are wanned into enthusiasm for our errand old religion and the dear old land of our people, we will send over the sea a deeper and a warmer “God bless him! ” Let ns now praise men of renown, and our fathers in their generations; . . . those men of mercy. whose podlv deeds have not failed; good things continue with their seed. Their posterity are a holy inheritance; and their seed hath stood in the covenants; and their children for their sakes remain forever; their seed and their glory . hall not be forsaken. Let the people shew their wisdom, and the Church declare tlieir praise.— I'eeles. 44. We are assembled to obey the command of God expressed in my text. One of the great duties of God’s Church, to ...
