The State of Society in California. There is no doubt that the great, cardinal object of pursuit of the thousands who almost sumultaneously emigrated to this country, had and has a tendency not to elevate and refine the mind, not to ennoble and expand the intellect, not to enlarge the affections of the heart; but on the contrary to cramp and confine the action of each and all, to the one narrow principle of selfishness. Organized Band of Robbers on the Overland Road to California. A letter, dated Durango, Mexico, May 7, furnishes some information relative to a regularly organized band of robbers on the overland route to California through Mexico. It says: There are many Indians on the road between Saltillo and this place. They have committed a great many depredations lately on small parties of Californians, and also on the Mexicans liviing on the road, but we were unmolested by them, although we saw several strong bands but a short distance form us, all mounted and ready to attack us. There is a large party of robbers between this place and Mazatlan— the same one that the Governor of Durango hired some six weeks ago to go out to fight the Indians, and furnished them with fine horses, arms, ammunition, &c. The first thing they did was to rob the Government of a large Caballado of mules, loaded with different kinds of produce and some specie, which was intended to pay off the Mexican army...
