"I HAVE FULL WITH HORRORS" [Newspaper Article] — California Star & Californian — 16 December 1848

"I HAVE FULL WITH HORRORS" We fear that our readers on perusing the details of outrage, violence and murder which it is this week our misfortune to lay before them, will be ready to exclaim in the words quoted above. It is deplorable that such crimes should be committed, and it is still more to be deplored that the state of the country is such as to render it highly improbable that the perpetrators of these atrocious outrages will meet with the severe and speedy punishment which they deserve. Unless the order-loving and the good rise as one man — unless they heartily and cheerfully unite and co-operate — in ferreting out, bringing to justice and punishing the lawless ruflians who thus outrage humanity, a condition of society will soon ensue wherein nothing that we prize or cherish will be safe — wherein the ruthless, abandoned and brutal will destroy the rights and the lives of the weak, the unprotected and the well-disposed It is proper we should state, in connection, with this sub...

MURDER AT SUTTERS FORT. [Newspaper Article] — California Star & Californian — 16 December 1848

MURDER AT SUTTER'S FORT. Sutter's Fort, Dec. 8, 1848. "We have been in a state of considerable excitement for the last two days, which is the result of the death of a man, in consequence of a gun shot from Mr. Pickett. Pickett and the man (Alderman, from Oregon) had had some difficulty about an enclosure in the fort, and, as I learn, the matter had twice been decided in Picket's favor, by the alcalde. It seems Pickett had hired an enclosure, into which Alderman had a door opening. Pickett forbade the use of the door and nailed it up on the outside. The man (Alderman) came with an axe into the enclosure (perhaps to open the door) while Picket was there, and Picket shot him with a double barrelled gun, loaded with buckshot. Ten shot (or shot holes) were found in his right arm, three in his right side, and one in his breast. He died about half an hour after the shot. It does not appear that Alderman assaulted P. at the time, but it is said he had threatened his life. "The alcalde was a...

HIGHWAY ROBBERY. [Newspaper Article] — California Star & Californian — 16 December 1848

HIGHWAY ROBBERY, And attempt to Murder, at San Jose. AND ATTEMPT TO MURDER, AT SAN JOSE. The supposed robbers have been arrested. They are William Campbell and David A. Davis, deserters from the 1st N. Y. Regt. "I am well assured that our new alcalde will do his duty fearlessly — that the public will sustain him — and that these men, if convicted, will meet the punishment they so justly deserve." _ Sandwich Islands. — Our advices from the Sandwich lslands, possess little interest. The " Pacifico" brings dates to the 25th ult. The trial of Mr. Judd, Minister of Finance, had not been brought on. Much feeling continues to exist among the foreign residents against the most prominent government officers, while it is feared by many, Judd may escape exnrnination. The official organ is very reserved respecting domestic brawls, and would rather speculate upon the probable results of El Dorado discoveries than exhibit the frailties of the government and government officers of those Islands. PRIVATH RIGHTS AND TUHLIC WRONG?. [Newspaper Article] — California Star & Californian — 16 December 1848

PRIVATH RIGHTS AND TUHLIC WRONG?. The title of this article, Mr. Editor, indicates its importance. At the first glance must strike the impartial reader as our, in which he is deeply concerned; firstly, as a citizen in regard to himself, and second, relatively, as to others. I cannot think it necessary to go into a detailed statement of what a citizen's private rights are; for each one sufficiently understands and feels what they are when he conceives them to be invaded. The Constitution of our glorious Union guarantees to us security in life, liberty, and property, and requires from us as a compensation, or rather gives us as a compensation, this security, upon our yielding up some of our natural rights. Among the various rights secured to us by the Constitution, is the right of trial by jury; the enjoyment of our liberty without restraint, when it is not exercised contrary to those principles and rules dictated by-society, for its mutual protection. When any of these are infringed,...
